Lesson 2

Identify strategies that can be performed to compute multiplication facts when multiplied
by the numbers 0 or 1.
Lesson Overview: Students will practice their computation facts for 0 and 1. The teacher will
begin the lesson by introducing new information. The teacher will explain the strategies and rules
when multiplying with the number 0 and 1. The teacher will model multiplications using 0 and 1
for each strategy. Then, the teacher will have the students complete the multiplication table for 0
and 1 to keep in their math journals. Next, the students will complete the worksheets for 0 and 1
using the strategies provided. The teacher will then read short stories that go along with the
factors 0 and 1. Finally, the worksheets will be corrected and graded in Schoology. Feedback
and comments from the teacher will be provided on their independence performance.
Materials Needed:
Multiplication Sheets for facts 0 and 1 (Appendix B & C)
Blank Multiplication Table Template (fill out columns and rows for 0 and 1) (Appendix P)
Short Stories (read short stories that go only with factors 0 and 1)

Document Camera
Interactive Whiteboard
Calculators (used to check answers)
Computer Devices (laptops, iPads)
Lesson Objective: When given multiplication strategies of the rules with 0 and 1, students will
be able to use them to compute multiplication facts with 80% accuracy.
Time: One- class session (45 min.)
Classroom Set-Up: 20-25 Student desks in pairs of two for shoulder partner pair share during
the lesson.
Computers, Projectors, Smart Interactive Whiteboard, and Schoology Online System
Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activity
Students will have their math journal from the day before and at the top of a new
sheet of paper, write down at the top; Strategies for Multiplying by 0 and 1.

Step 2: Content Presentation

The teacher states what the class will be learning strategies on how to multiply
when
using 0 and 1.

The teacher shows first the strategy that when anything is multiplied by the
number 0 the answer will always be 0 (0x4=0, 4x0=0).

The teacher used the document camera to show the students as they are writing
this strategy down in the math journal.

The teacher shows the second strategy that when anything is multiplied by the
number 1 the answer will always be the other number that was multiplied by 1
(1x8=8, 8x1=8).

The teacher uses the document camera to show the students as they are writing
this strategy down in the math journal.

The teacher will model a few examples with multiplication using these two
strategies on the interactive whiteboard and have the students complete a few
sample problems as a class.

Students will talk with their shoulder partner (pair share) and tell them the two
new strategies they have learned with one another.

The teacher will show students how to fill out the blank multiplication table with
the answers for the 0 and 1 columns/rows. Students will keep the multiplication
table in their math journal to refer back to during the year. (Appendix D)

The teacher will read any short stories that go with using the factors 0 and 1 to the
students.

The teacher will have the students go into Schoology.com and fill out the two
worksheet assignments for multiplying 0 and 1 for the students to complete.
(Appendix B &C)

Worksheets will be corrected in Schoology and students can check their grades in
their personal Schoology account. There may also be comments made with any
feedback from the teacher on their independence performance.

Step 3: Learner Participation

Students will write in the multiplication strategies in their math journals.

Students will complete some sample problems from the teacher.

Students will do a partners share explaining to one other the strategies when multiplying
with the numbers 0 and 1.

Students will complete the blank multiplication table with the teacher by filling out the
columns/rows for multiplying by 0 and 1. (Appendix P)

Students will listen while the teacher reads short stories that go with factors 0 and 1.

Students will complete the worksheets for multiplying by 0 and 1 in Schoology.

(Appendix B & C)

Step 4: Assessment
The teacher will have the students log on to their Schoology account and have the
students complete the two digital worksheet assignments. The students must
complete each worksheet independently. Calculators can be a technology tool to
use to check the answers.
Step 5: Follow-Through Activity
Any unfinished word problems from the digital worksheets may be able to be
completed at home in Schoology as homework. Completion of both digital
worksheets will be due the following day.
