Summer 2015 Independent Study Proposal

Advanced GIS: Web GIS Applications

Megan Rybacki

Introduction:
The objective of the following proposal is to fulfill the requirements of a
GIS application course (Advanced GIS and Web GIS) and to obtain the
GIS certificate by my August graduation deadline. Outlined in this
proposal are my academic interests, course objectives, and assignment
schedule for an advanced web GIS applications course.

Pre-Requisite Skills and Knowledge:

I have fulfilled the requirements for the following courses:
1. Remote Sensing and Cartography group - GEOG6074 Computer
Analytical Cartography
2. Introduction to GIS group- PLAN2054 Introduction to Geographic
Information Systems
3. GIS Applications Group- PLAN6091 GIS Project Formulation and
Management

Methodology:
Course work will be completed as an independent study during the
summer semester (May 11th -August 8th). I will be working with Trent
Lobdell (community planner), to further develop a GIS web application
that was introduced in the PLAN6091 course. I will report my progress
and assignments to Trent and Professor Wang by the designated due
dates. I also propose to develop a blog and publish weekly posts about
my progress and project work, including links to troubleshooting tips,
tutorials and resources that I discover.

Course Objectives:
I am interested in gaining knowledge in the function, design and
applicability of geo-spatial technologies. This includes preparing and
organizing spatial data/information for its use and accessibility on the
web. I have a basic understanding and knowledge of HTML and CSS,
but over this course I will educate myself on JavaScript and other
various web-authoring tools for web GIS.

By the end of the course I will have further developed an Arc Map
Online GIS web application that incorporates custom spatial data
layers, and an aesthetically appealing and functional user interface
with widgets and interactive API features. This web application will
help connect people to available assistance and will streamline the
referral process for assistance providers.

Course Requirements:

Research on internet mapping techniques and solutions

Weekly blog posts on research topics, best practices, and
technical achievements
Coding workshops, and ESRI Tutorials
Final project and report including data design (flow charts,
wireframes), technology methods, and recommendations for the
Homeless Service Agency web application.

Course Schedule:
May Complete readings and exercises and become familiar with
terms, syntax, and potential application models
Meet with Trent to determine specific application objectives and
benchmark dates
June Begin application practices in June once the server has been
established
Continue working on exercises and begin developing the final
project application
July Continue developing the final project application
Begin compiling training package for future courses
August Present final application and report
