Lake City boys knock off Beal City in Highland

cadillac news

LAKE CITY This one made

them feel good.
Really good, in fact.
Lake City continued its upswing
as it beat Beal City 41-38 in a Highland Conference boys basketball
contest Tuesday night.
For first-year Trojan coach Brad
Besko, this is a big one.

"This is a huge win for our team

and even more, for our program," he
said. "Anytime you can beat a team
like Beal City, that's huge.
"The kids bought into our game
plan tonight and we made them take
some tough shots against the zone
that we wanted to play."
On the flip side, Besko said his
team did a solid job of handling Beal
City pressure as the Aggies were on

Lake City all night.

The Trojans led 15-7 after the first
quarter and expanded that to 25-16
at halftime.
Beal City cut it to 33-32 going into
the fourth quarter.
Things stayed tight late in the
fourth quarter until freshman
guard Cade Peterson hit two free
throws with 12 seconds remaining
to put Lake City up three.

"The kids have been playing better and playing with a lot of confidence," Besko added. "That carried
over into tonight."
Lucas Marion had a big night for
the Trojans with 19 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks while Kory
Root had eight points, 14 rebounds
and four blocks.

MANTON This is the

point in the year where
youre looking for your
young team to show signs
theyre growing up.
For coach Ryan Hiller, hes
beginning to like some of
what he sees.
Manton got balanced scoring up and down the roster
to keep pace with leagueleading McBain with a 71-38
win over Northern Michigan Christian in Highland
Conference boys basketball
action Tuesday night.
The win keeps the Rangers (9-3, 6-1 Highland) a
game behind the unbeaten
Ramblers after the first half
of conference play.
Against the Comets, Hiller
liked much of what he saw,
especially the play from his
freshmen, including 6-foot-3
Ethan Ancick, who scored
12 points and grabbed eight
rebounds.
I thought our kids played
hard tonight, he said. I did
think we had some let-ups
early on with our concentration, missed some easy
puppies, missed some box
outs, and didnt get back on
defense a couple of times.
There are things we have
to do better starting tomorrow.
For NMC coach Dale Veddler, it was a matter of being
both short-handed and, well,
shortat least relative to
the Rangers.
Theyre a good sized
teamtheyre big, he said.
We were a few players
short tonight for various
reasons.
I thought we played
pretty good defense, and
we battled on the boards,
he added. I thought Kade
(Ellens) and Cody (Winkle)
really battled for us, as did
Jordan Eisenga. The offense
just didnt flow real well
for us, but credit Mantons
defense for that. With their
size, there just wasnt a

This was a good game for
us, though, he said. How
we come out of this one is
the question for the kids.
Veddler was pleased with his
teams aggressiveness, as the
Comets got to the line a seasonhigh 25 times, making 12.
Tyler Swing paced the

Rangers with 13 points and

nine rebounds, while Hunter Ruell added nine points
and Brock Clough chipped

Hiller praised the efforts
of Chandler Shazri (seven

Mason Baker in finishing
the win.

Cody Farr led the Comets

with a game-high 16 points,
while Eisenga had six and
Ellens six to go with five
boards, two steals and a pair
of blocks.
