ATM aaATAA TR NYSalt Sculpture Project ttall started with a tealization while walking along the beach of the Dead Sea. | was fascinated with the forms Grealed by the crystal salt coverings cn stones, branches and other natural and man-made objects. | decided to tty and create my ovm imaginary forms coated with salt On the year 2000 | started this projeci by searching for the right materials to sculat, Sullable for a sail coating and a method to dip them in the saline waters of the Dead Sea Soon enough I realized | had to learn more about the Dead S2a, as it was my mala medim wnose salt concentration and unique eco system allowed the growth of sparkling white crystals. It also became apparent tat | could not co this project alone. The basic infrastructure needed fo be created in that harsh environment, was a project that | could not technically and economically handle alone. Arieh Cohen from Kibbutz Mitzpeh Shalem cn the Dead Sea offered to hel with funding ane use of a beach location. Atter the first year | met Michael Rieder, @ sculptor who jcined me, aporeciating my love cf this unique place anc process. This process invoNed submerging the work in the Dead Sea waters and waiting tl the salt crystals grew covering the forms with a thick crystalline covering, The Dead Sea's location and chemical composition caused us many problems. Violen storms, big waves and sirong winds contributed to the loss of 25 sculptures in the frst 3 years. The sea is a tough partner and demands its sacrifice On & few occasions we lost in the floods and storms all cur works inclucing the rafts. Over time the artists Dow Levi Newman and Mara Gandelman joined offering invaluable nelp and inspiration in the creation of these large- scale sculptures, The team of 4 artists from 4 places and 4 different characters working together is a unique experience in itself. ‘Arieh Cohen from Kiboutz Mitzpeh Shalem is our sponser and we all are grateful for his patient, support and calmness during all the catastrophes, challenges and beauty af this project.
