Research Question : Which type of potato chips that contains the highest
fats?
2. Hypothesis : Lays have the highest amount of fat, because Lays have
0,33 grams of fats per 1 gram of serving

6/18 = 0.33 gram of fat per 1 gram of serving (Lays)

4/15 = 0.27 gram of fat per 1 gram of serving (Chitato)
4,5/15 = 0.3 gram of fat per 1 gram of serving (Value Plus)

3. Independent Variables

: Potato chips (Value Plus, Chitato, Lays)

Dependent Variables

: The weight of fats

Controlled Variables

: The weight of potato chips (5 g), the volume of

acetone (20 mL), size of the beakers (50 mL)

Tools & Materials :

100 mL glass beaker (9)
100 mm glass petri dish (9)
10 mL measuring cylinder (1)
Glass rod (1)
Potato chips (homogenised using mortar and pestle) (5 g)
Acetone (180 mL)
Digital scale
Safety glasses (1 per student)
Latex or rubber gloves (1 pair per student)

5. Method
:
- Label the beaker you are using with the name of the food that has been
assigned to your group

label the petri dish with the name of the food assigned to your group
Wear safety glasses and gloves throughout the experiment

1. Weigh 5 g of homogenised potato chips and place in a 100 mL glass beaker.

2. Record the weight of the beaker with the potato chips in it (Table 1).
3. Add 10 mL of acetone to the potato chips in the beaker.
4. Stir with a glass rod until well mixed (for approximately 1 minute) (in a fume hood or
well ventilated area). Then allow to settle for 1 minute.
5. Carefully decant the acetone into the Petri dish, making sure the potato chips remain
in the beaker.
6. Add another 10 mL of acetone to the potato chips and repeat steps 4 and 5.
7.

Place the Petri dish with acetone and the beaker with potato chips in a fume hood

(or well ventilated area)

8.

Allow the acetone in the Petri dish to dry overnight in a fume hood (or a well

ventilated area) so you can see the lipid that was extracted.
9.

Allow the beaker with the potato chips to dry overnight. Weigh the beaker with the

potato chips (record in Table 1). Calculate the weight difference (Initial weight of beaker
with potato chips weight of beaker with potato chips after extraction) and record in
Table 1.

The weight difference is the amount of lipid that was extracted from the

sample.
10. If the beaker with the potato chips arent dry, put all the 3 trials in the oven to make
them dry.

Validity of the Hypothesis

The hypothesis is not valid because according to the result, Value Plus contain the
highest amount of fats and Chitato has the lowest amount of fats.

Validity of the Method

The strength of the method is the observer did the experiment 3 times for each brands
of chips. The observer also use the same amount of acetone and chips.
The weakness is sometimes the acetones is so hard to evaporate. The observer didnt
use the same size of the beaker, so its hard to calculate with each of the experiment.
The observer also didnt break the food with the same structure.
Improvements :
-

Use oven, to help the acetone evaporate or use a higher concentration of

acetone
- Use the same size beaker

Data Interpretation
The potato chips that contain the least fat is Chitato. The potato chips that contain the highest
amount of fats is Value Plus.
The recommended amount of fat is 44 - 78 grams per day (Dr. Tina M. St. John)
Its not okay to eat 3 packs of potato chips per day because the maximum fat calorie intake is 78
grams per day.
