Areas of Study:
• Singing: In music class, we will focus on learning proper
posture, vowel sounds, pitch matching, and singing techniques.
We will focus on singing folk songs from American culture and
cultures around the world.
• Music Literacy: Students will develop skills in reading and
writing standard music notation. We will explore rhythmic values
and notes on the staff.
• Listening Skills: Students will learn about style, form,
melodic shape, rhythm, and mood through listening to examples
of classical and folk music.
• Music and Movement: Students will learn how movement
and music are related through beat related activities, movement
games, and folk dances.
• Instruments: Students will learn how to correctly use
percussion and melodic instruments. Examples include maracas,
drums, xylophones and recorders.
• Music History: Students will learn about important
composers and styles of music through history.
• Music and Culture: Students will learn about music’s role
in American culture and how music is used in other cultures.
• Creating Music: Students will have opportunities for
melodic and rhythmic composition and improvisation.

Grading: In music class, students will be graded on individual


written assignments, singing solos, instrumental playing tests, and
other performance assessments. Some grade levels may have written
quizzes and group composition projects. Participation is also a vital
part of music grading since music is a performance based subject area.

Written projects in music class will be graded on the


following:
Neatness
Effort
Creativity
Following Directions

Effort is based on: the student’s willingness to work until the


assignment is complete, willingness to approach a lesson in a positive
manner with enthusiasm, ability to work independently and with others
in a polite and cooperative manner, and ability to follow directions as
well as school and classroom rules.
