Lesson Plan Format

Subject: Spelling
Unit: Knowledge and Skills

Grade Level: 2nd

Time Estimate: 30 mins.

Topic: Spelling Development

Goal(s): The learner will understand how to spell new vocabulary words and understand
the meaning of the word while using it when reading and writing.
Objective(s): The learner will use key terms from the word bank to complete sentences.
TEKS: 2.1A
Materials/Resources/Technology needs:
Pencils, paper, bags, note cards, worksheet, word bank, and You-tube video.

Instructional Procedures
Focusing Event: I will ask the students to tell me why is it important to learn how to
spell? They will give me real life examples and explanations using current events.
Teaching/ Learning Procedures: Teacher will begin lesson by introducing real life
example of why spelling words are important. Teacher will ask students to give real life
examples of a time when they did not know how to spell certain words and how it
affected their outcome.
Teacher will play a You-tube video on why spelling is important. After the video,
students will be placed in groups of three, and the teacher will pass out bags with note
cards with words that are scrambled. They will also receive a worksheet to fill in the
missing word. They are to find out which word goes in the bank and spell it the correct
way. Once they have found the first word, they will pull out another scrambled word.
Finally, students will be given an individual assessment on the spelling words by
switching worksheet with a partner and allowing them to read the sentences.

Formative Check: Monitor participation and responses.


Reteach: Model directions and re-teach as needed.
Closure: Restate objective and purpose of how spelling is used to communicate in real
life.
Assessment/Summative Evaluation: Students will work individually on a spelling
assessment to check for understanding.

Modifications/Notes:
All of my students will be given a word bank, extended time, peer tutoring, reading
assistance, preferential seating, verbal description of information and check for
understanding.
