Unit Title: Forces and Interactions

Name: Dan Humphreys

Content Area: Science

Grade Level: 11

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

HS-PS2-1. Analyze data to support the claim that Newtons second law of motion describes the
mathematical relationship among the net force on a macroscopic object, its mass, and its
acceleration. [Clarification Statement: Examples of data could include tables or graphs of position or
velocity as a function of time for objects subject to a net unbalanced force, such as a falling object, an
object rolling down a ramp, or a moving object being pulled by a constant force.] [Assessment Boundary:
Assessment is limited to one-dimensional motion and to macroscopic objects moving at non-relativistic
speeds.]
Use mathematical representations to support the claim that the total momentum of a system of objects is
conserved when there is no net force on the system. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on the quantitative
conservation of momentum in interactions and the qualitative meaning of this principle.] [Assessment Boundary:
Assessment is limited to systems of two macroscopic bodies moving in one dimension.]
Apply scientific and engineering ideas to design, evaluate, and refine a device that minimizes the force on
a macroscopic object during a collision.* [Clarification Statement: Examples of evaluation and refinement could
include determining the success of the device at protecting an object from damage and modifying the design to
improve it. Examples of a device could include a football helmet or a parachute.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment is
limited to qualitative evaluations and/or algebraic manipulations.]
Big Ideas:
Students will understand Newtons 3 Laws of Motion
-An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless
acted upon by an unbalanced force.
-The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the magnitude of the net force, in the same direction as the net force,
and is inversely proportional to the mass of the object
-For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
-Be able to take ideas and apply to real world applications on their own

Unit Goals and Objectives:

Students will be able to understand the relationships of the variables in Newtons 1 st, 2nd and 3rd Laws of Motion. They will be
able to associate a problem, or demonstration with the correct equation and understand what is happening.

Unit Summary:
This unit will cover forces and interactions. It will be based on understanding Newtons Laws of Motion. Students will perform
activities in order to visualize and have a hands on experience with the Laws of Motion while knowing what to look for and how to
interpret this data.

Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:
Class discussion after a demonstration of
Newtons 1st Law, car stops and person
stays in motion.

Formative:
Flashcards for Laws and Formulas

Summative:
Apply lesson ideas to lab on Newtons
Laws.
