Science Innovation and Invention Exposition (ScInIX) 2015

1.0

INTRODUCTION
The program, Science Innovation and Invention Exposition is the annual program under
Science Innovation Organization (SIO), Faculty of Education, UiTM Shah Alam. This
programme is one of the compulsory project every year since 2013. The idea of this
programme is proposed by the previous president of this society and being continued until
now. For this semester, the ScInIX programme is conducted by the programme director,
Amierul Hafreez bin Noor Hasnan with the help of all members of the organization, SIO.

This year, we are upgrading the format of the programme, where it will involve the other
faculty at UiTM. Usually, this programme will only involve the science students in Faculty
of Education, but this time, we are going to invite the participants from Faculty of Applied
Science and Faculty of Engineering. This is because the event has been expanded to be
a faculty programme. The focus of this programme is to create the innovation and
invention thinking among the UiTM science students.

As we know, this programme is about competition and exhibition regarding the new
invention and innovation that will encourage critical and creative thinking among science
students. This thinking is important as it will produce the creative generation in future. New
generation nowadays are getting involved in usage of sophisticated gadget, which will
expose them to many new inventions around the world. Therefore, this programme is
important as it can help the students to generate idea from new technology to produce
new product or any innovation that give benefits to the world and surrounding.

Therefore, some formats for this programme were changed. Before this, the programme
involved the exhibition of innovation products, for this time we are conducting a
competition which will reward the best innovation and invention made by the participants
from the represented faculty. We are opening the competition into two groups of
participation, individual and teams. There are four categories available; (1)agricultural,
environmental and renewable energy, (2)biotechnology, health and chemicals,
(3)manufacturing process, machine and equipment and (4)educational tools. All the
participants can choose to involve in which categories according to their specific course
and expertise.

Science Innovation and Invention Exposition (ScInIX) 2015

Each participant need to produce their own product and will be evaluated by the
professional judges that are invited from the other universities and their product will be
display to the audience with specific explanations regarding the product. This programme
will be held at Intec Hall, Faculty of Education, for three days starting from 15-17
November 2015.

RATIONALE
This year, the programme, Science Innovation and Invention Exposition (ScInIX) 2015 will
consist of two part, competition and also exhibition. We are open for 10 individual
participants and 15 group participants. Each participant is compulsory to come out with
one project of innovation and invention and exhibit the products to the visitors. The
participant from various faculties will open many opportunities to them to explore creative
invention and make the audience or visitors to have better understanding in innovation of
science.

This programme also aims of fostering a culture of love for creative thinking and innovative
among the students of UiTM and also the outside visitors. ScInIX 2015 will be held for
three days, involving presenting the product and expose their new product to the
audiences. We believe that this programme will provide many opportunity for participants
to contribute ideas and innovations in the field of the science and technology to
demonstrate their ability to learn and create something new.

Besides that, as group and also individual participant, it can help to foster co-operation
and competitiveness among the participants to create a competitive product in terms of
realistic, practical and economical. During this event, we also invite the outside visitor from
the other faculties and universities in order to expose and give them opportunity to enjoy
the innovation created. There will be the presence of some science and technology
company that can give their opinion regarding the innovation and maybe get interested to
have some collaboration with the inventor.

We as the organizer are expecting positive feedback from both participants and also the
visitors. Our aim to educate people about the scientist innovation is hoped can be realized
and will bring newer product that can be commercialized in future.

THE CURRICULUM
3.1

NEEDS ANALYSIS
We are conducting two methods in order to determine the need analysis for this
programme.

The need analysis is important as it will determine our objective in conducting this
event.
(i)

Observation.
As this programme is our organization annual programme, we as the
member of organization had made some observation during last semester
ScInIX. Previously, this programme only involves the creative innovation
exhibition from the member of Science Innovation Organization (SIO) and
also the science student in Faculty of Education. We can see the great
commitment of the participant in making new invention in order to make
sure the programme is interesting to the visitors. The audience that come
to watch and explore the innovation programme are from various faculties
in UiTM. This showed that the students of UiTM are actually very interested
in the innovation field and might get some ideas regarding the creativity of
science during this event. Therefore, we are going to hold the competition
that will give the inventor some rewards for their creativity in producing new
product. The event is also open up to other science faculty in UiTM.

(ii)

Interview
On 22 May 2015, an interview was conducted by the programme director,
Amierul Hafreez Bin Noor Hasnan along with few committee members of
SIO regarding the effectiveness of the ScInIX programme and the
improvements that can be made for this upcoming annual programme. The
interview was conducted by asking the previous participant to give their
opinion. The interview question that were;
a. What do you think about the Science Innovation and Invention
Exposition that conducted by SIO last semester?

Science Innovation and Invention Exposition (ScInIX) 2015

b.

Do you think that it is worth to have the innovation and invention

without any prize or rewards?

c. Why did you participate for the exhibition last semester?

d. Do you want to protect your invention and make it your own
Intellectual Properties (IP)?
e. How do you think your innovation can create the commercialization
aspect and attract people to come and see your invention?
f.

Do you want to create some new opportunities to have any

collaboration in industry to introduce your new product?

Overall, the responds from all the previous participants are very comparative and
wise. Most of them think that this programme is very good to be held because it
can create new innovation product and generate creativity among the science
students. They also think that the competition should be held in order to give more
encouragement to the participant to produce better quality of product. Besides
that, they also want their invention to be protected in proper way and very agree
to have any commercialization for their products. Most importantly, from the
interview, we know that the participant want to educate people about science and
if possible they want this programme to be expand to be one of grand faculty
programme that will involve the participants and audience from the other faculties
in UiTM.
Therefore, after deep discussion between SIO members and the lecturers, we now
consider all the factors that can bring the improvisation to this event and try to
make it interesting and beneficial to all science students.

Therefore, the methods implemented in the programme are small scale interviews
and focus group. The emphasis is more on the (1)product evaluation, (2)product
displayed and (3)conducive facility provision.
i.

Product evaluation

Product evaluation is the evaluation of the product produce by the participant. The
products are graded based on the rubric provided during registration before the
competition. The products are judged by the jury. The criteria that are emphasized
in the evaluating process is the product making-process, the originality of the
product, the value of the product created and the style of the product. The
participants need to present their products.
ii.

Product displayed

The products are well-displayed for the audience and the jury. During this session,
the participants need to present their product for evaluation and display. Any
question regarding the product will be answered directly from the participant.
During this session also is the best time for the participants to convince the sponsor
to take the product to further develop.
iii.

Conducive facility provided

CONCLUSION
This programme is meant to meet its objective, which is to nurture creativity and innovative
thinking among researchers and visitors and also display invention/innovation/design
produced by researchers. Then hopefully, it could improve their understanding in science
and technology and becoming a scientist that can help our country and society in future.
If the objectives can be achieved, it means that the programme is a success. The flaw of
the programme, if there is, will be fixed and the upgraded version of the programme can
be held in the future for the same purpose. It can also be a guide to a different programme
with the same objective. The student should treasure their youth with all wonderful,
meaningful and beneficial knowledge that they can have and learned especially in science.
Literally, new generations havent realized the importance of science in their daily life and
it would be too late for them to regret that they do not join this programme earlier. It is our
responsibilities as the committee member of Science Innovation Organization to help them
to be aware of it. We want them to have all the knowledge they can get in order to be the
example to the next generation.
