Course Description: This course integrates the study of reading, writing, grammar and usage, and speaking and listening
through exploration of the theme of Social Justice. In this class, students will: review the writing processes of planning,
drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading; polish grammar/usage skills in the context of their writing; read a variety of world
literature, including short stories, novels, poetry, mythology, drama, memoir, and informational text; respond to literature both
orally and through their written work; and enrich their vocabulary through weekly vocabulary assignments and quizzes.

Grading Policy:
Summative Assessments: 71%
(tests, projects, class presentations, major essays, midterms count twice)
Formative Assessments: 29%
(quizzes, oral work, writing tasks, graphic organizers, illustrations, homework/class work for accuracy)
Finals: 20%
Final Average = .80 x ((Summative x .71) + (Formative x .29)) + .20 x (Final Exam)

WORLD LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION


Focusing on a study of World Literature, the student develops an understanding of chronological context and the relevance of
period structures in literature within cultures around the world. The student develops an understanding of the ways the place
of origin of a work of literature affects its structure and how the chronology of a work of literature affects its meaning. The
student develops an understanding of literature as both a product of its culture and as a culture-bearer and recognizes the
commonalities and differences among works of literature from different times and places in the world.
Reading (Literary & Informational)
ELAGSE9-10RL1 & RI1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly, as well as
inferences drawn from the text.
ELAGSE9-10RL2 & RI2: Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of a
text; provide an objective summary of the text.
ELAGSE9-10RL3 & RI3: Analyze how characters and ideas develop over the course of a text.
ELAGSE9-10RL4 & RI4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text; analyze the impact of
specific word choices on meaning and tone.

Writing
ELAGSE9-10W1: Write arguments to support claims of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and
sufficient evidence.
