Song

Song title
German Whip

Artist
Meridian Dan UK top 20 drum and bass / Hip hop artist.

Genre
Hip Hop Soul To bring the emotion and the attitude to the audience.

What are the conventions of music videos from this genre?

The characteristics of a hip-hop genre need to tie in to the music video and what is being
shown. The clothing that people have to wear and the angles and close up shots in the hip
hop videos are needed to simplify the artists power over the audience. The conventions of a
typical hip hop video is where the artists would wear typical hip hop hipster clothes such as
baggy trousers, gold chains, flap back hats, and a raging attitude. There also tends to be a
bit of emotion in hip hop videos as they typically like to show off what they are and like to
show their passion and culture and that is what I want to do in my video.
In this section, the rappers will be lip singing at the camera with baggy casual clothes. The
soul section will need to inflict the energy and the emotional side of things. Expensive cars
and lots of money are the typical conventions of a music video. Expensive things signify
wealth and attitudes in hip-hop videos. Other conventions such as power are usually males,
who dominate and have females attention all round. Other conventions of should music can
be spiritual, emotional and shocking. These two conventions are being tied in together in my
music video, as it brings relationships together as well.

How are you going to meet these conventions in your video?

Style (in-concert and as live footage; animation (stop motion, digital); interpretative; narrative;
impressionist; surrealist; pastiche; parody; referencing; homage)

I am going to meet the conventions by adding hip hop content in my music video
where there will be cheap micky taking cars and people rapping in the video.
The way typical hip-hop artists present themselves with their baggy casual clothes
and their flap backs, I will be featuring these in my video.
Also the type of cars typical British boy racers have, or first cars. The type of camera
shots I will be using in my music video will show what sort of passion the music video
will bring, and the conventions of a typical rap/ hip-hop video.

Costume
Casual wear, baggy trousers and a flap cap. Would like people to be slightly on the smart
casual side but there is no necessary uniform code needed as it is based on reality and most
people wear casual in their free time.

Lighting

Will be natural light, and if some parts of the video is filmed inside, specified lighting will be
used, such as spotlights.

Locations

Maidenhead
Reading
Locations includes parts of roads in these areas and off-road locations. Hill top locations will
be included as well. The type of roads where hip hop artists normally base themselves, like
behind a building in a bit of a rough environment.

Shot types
Short shot, Medium shot, Long shot, Establishing shot, Wide shot, Worm shot, Low shot,
Train track shot, Moving shot, Bird eye view shot, Over shoulder shot.

Research
What music videos have you watched to research your genre?
I havent really researched any other music videos for the type of genre I want to do, I
already had the mind step and the idea about doing what I was passionate to do before
reaching this stage. I have researched different camera shots and styles within different
type of music videos, which some I have really liked and will follow through some.

How have these videos influenced the decisions made? Include screen shots of the key
influences

Because the type of hip-hop and soul I have seen on the internet
inspired me to do some of the type of shots they have used in their
music videos and I feel that they give out a lot of power and energy. It

can bring out the soft emotion in the audience but then at the same time
changing to the hip-hop side of the video, then back to the emotional
side which is the soul. It also shows the attitude of the rappers in the
video and their raging attitudes to their precessions, like making the
audience jealous of what they have.

Lyrics
Insert the song lyrics below
If you see man driving a German whip
Blacked out window, leaning back

See man driving a German whip

Look like a baller, P's and that
I don't kick ball, do I look like a baller?
See man driving a German whip
Who told you I move like pauper?
See man driving a German whip
[Verse 1: Meridian Dan]
Who told you I serve and flip?
Ride my bike on the Burnham Dip
Man talk but I'm gonna burn 'em quick
Mad man nutty on a Sherman tip
Dem man wanna mess with my aura
Someone said that's bang out of order
Can't make 6 foot man feel smaller
Treat dem man like private caller
I don't wanna box man, trust me
Who told you that I got rusty?
Draw for the WD-40
Punch up big man, old like 40
Big boy bike, big ting 650
Moving along on the road too quickly
Pure big dogs in this bits
I never see no man chasing Frisbee
[Hook]
[Verse 2: Big H]
Man are big over there
Dem man don't live over there
Man will take off ya wig over there
Don't care who you're with over there
When manaman's hungry, manaman eat
Manaman's tired, manaman sleep
Manaman talking, manaman speak
They link girls that manaman beat
Don't be on a hero ting
Keep it moving, earphones in
Lickle man, man had to chief up him
Punch up Scratchy, chief up Trim

When manaman's driving, manaman speed

Manaman's smoking manaman's weed
Give manaman space, let manaman breathe
When I arrive, manaman leave
[Hook]
[Verse 3: Jme]
Bad boy crep, German whip, not white Vans, or white vans
When boydem try ask for my name, I say old-school Meridian man
Guys better show respect if they see man pulling up in a TT (trust!)
Guys better show respect if they see man filling up in BP (trust!)
20 of diesel mate, if I fill up my tank it'll make me late
I ain't gonna lie, I see you man on foot on the high road moving bait
Man's just try'na stack paper, don't watch what man's earning
Man paid over 30 bags sterling, German whip but I ain't in Berlin

Meaning of the song

Does the song have a meaning? If so, what is it?

The song brings out the mean and the typical rapping type of meaning. The song
really reflects on the audience to what they are watching, so instead of the
characters with lots of money and fancy cars, they have not so good cars with a
funny teenage attitude. The video will contain shots of cars on the road and
other sections where people are rapping, and others where the video clip will
change and then back to the story of the music video. It will contain eye contact
content to, and this will make the audience think the characters are looking at
them. The meaning the action with the cars and the typical rapping and low shot
camera shots really fits in to the songs meaning.

How will your visuals relate to the song? (Illustrate, Amplify or Disjuncture)
The visuals will relate because of the song matching to the video content I will include. Such
as typical hard looking parts which would be people in the video looking and focussing on
the roads and driving, with not a care in the world. The parts of the song where the rapping
is, this will be over the parts in the video where there is more action and adventure which
includes little emotion. The lighting and the way I will be expressing different sections in the
video will most likely tie in to how the video is being presented.

Storyboard

Think carefully about the shots you will be using. Consider the range of shots/angles
to give interest and perspective

Script
Description of what will happen in your video inc. camera
movements, angles etc

The type of camera angles and movements in the video will sometimes
be quite jerky to make is look like a real life action event especially for
the audience. There will be a series of rapping sections while the driver
is operating a vehicle and showing off his might in an attempt to be a
rapper. The characters will typically be dressed as rappers, in baggy
clothes and a flap back hat, driving cars to a hip hop song. The
characters are trying to prove themselves to be hard, popular individuals
that intend to intimidate people they dont like and showing they are the
bad guys in the town. They also will be showing off their cars and their
skills.

Mood board
Create a mood board showing what look your music video will have. Add images
showing ideas of mise-en-scene, characters, costumes and colours that will be
present in the different shots.
