Problem Solving Maps Course Objectives

1) Understand the problems associated with the

traditional approach to improve math education

2) Discuss the basic thinking skills needed to solve math

problems
3) Learn Problem Solving Maps to enhance student
thinking skills
4) Understand strategies to incorporate Problem Solving Maps
in the classroom
5) Explore alternative applications of Problem
Solving Maps

Why do you think students performance in math so low?

Teachers gave their opinions...
Some of the obstacles blocking math learning based on my experience.

from Pio Val. Elem.
School...
1. No mastery in the four
fundamental operations
2. Pupils thinking that math is difficult
3. Poor comprehension, and lack of
visualization
4. Environmental factors that really
affect the interest of the pupils

The 5 Obstacles blocking math learning based
on my experiences:

2) No follow-up or guidance of the parents at
home in their math lessons.
3) No mastery of the basic concept in
mathematics
4) Difficulties in comprehension and
understanding of the problems, and

room to facilitate on line learning and power
point presentation.

As far as my students concern,
the obstacles blocking math
learning i experienced in my
classroom is that they instilled
in their mind that math subject
is very difficult and hard to
understand. They find some of
the mathematical process is to
long to be followed..

for me, based on my experiences,
some students hate math because
of their belief that math is hard and
difficult.. and we, as teachers are
also responsible for these, why do
they hate math? maybe the
reasons are not just teachers factor
but also peer factor and their
surroundings, as a teachers don't
let it happened.. so we must help
and motivate our students to enjoy
and to love math, we must provide
problems based on their level up to
the higher level.. i think this training
will help us to make our students
love math...

How about students say?

Obstacles they experiences in learning math...
The teacher moves too fast.
The teacher knows the subject matter but cannot teach.
They get problems in the exam that are different from the ones
they did in class.
They do not see the importance/relevance of math
They go blank on exams
The exams are too hard
They are not capable in doing math
The teacher is disorganized.
So as teachers we have to find ways how to make our pupils
enjoy while learning math...

Some ideal math learning process

Be effective
Teach students tools that are transferable
from one topic to another
Allow teachers to teach a variety of topics
Be easily incorporated into the existing
curriculum
Not require an enormous amount of training

As I continue discovering different approach

on how my students
to learn, so grateful I am when I am chose one of the scholars on
the on line
math workshop. At first I have a hesitant of joining because I
thought that it is
boring and teaching the usual approach to learners, but when I
continue to
follow the assigned task and tried to use the first assignment to
my pupils I
observed that the pupils are more interested and willing to
participate on my
subjects. They can easily follow the rules whatever the lesson is
and can
answer the problems with no worries.
As a result of the new approach, I noticed to
my pupils improved
their attitudes towards the subject, as well as their ability to
answer problems.
Learners were more enthusiastic and more involved, whereas
previously they
had felt detached from topics and more engaged in solving. In
group
activities, their performance was more personal and more
reflective.
The joys of being a teacher that no money can buy are seeing
the
students having progress and awareness in the real essence of
life and
receiving back the love in whatever ways students might express
them. As a
teacher the best thing to do is to be prepared the unexpected.

Example Conclusion Graph

The main teaching objective
is for students to uncover math rules
by seeing a pattern from specific
example.

Multi Rule Branch

The main teaching objective is for
students to provide the steps to
solve a problem along with a
logic ( using math rules )
supporting each step.

Math Breaker
The goal is to use the problem
solving maps to teach as many
topics as possible so that students
internalize the thinking skills to the
extent that they use them to solve
future problems on their own.
