Program: Economic and Demographic Trends: A Discussion about Minnesota's
Future - Susan Browor, State Demographer and Dr. Laura Kalambokidis, State
Economist
‘Our guests are in charge of making the forecasts that give policy makers the information
to keep up with changing population and economic trends.
‘Susan Brower became the State Demographer in February 2012. In that capacity, she
travels the state talking with Minnesotans about the new social and economic realities
that are brought about by recent demographic shifts. Brower’s work applies an
understanding of demographic trends to changes in a range of areas including the state's
economy and workforce, education, health, immigration and rural population changes,
Brower earned her Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Michigan, specializing in
demography and family sociology. She also holds a master's degree in public policy from
Humphrey Schoo! of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Laura Kalambokidis serves as Stale Economist since 2013 and as a professor at
| the University of Minnesota in the department of Applied Economics. Sheis responsible for producing and presenting the state's revenue and economic
forecasts.
Dr. Kalambokidis is also a Professor in the Department of Applied Economics at the
University of Minnesota and an Extension Economist there. She teaches public finance
and does research on a range of federal and state tax issues. Her current research
concerns tax incentives for economic development, state business tax policy and
‘subsidies for charitable contributions, She holds a Ph.D. in economies from the
University of Michigan and an undergraduate degree in economics from the University of
Minnesota

“NEW” Professional Development After Lunch Session from ~12:30 - 4:15 p.m.
Online Professional Development Opportunities - Jim Hatten
Jim Hatten, PhD, will talk about online professional development opportunities for scheo!
districts. His company, Perideo Corporation, offers online asynchronous focus groups
that can be used fo enhance, extend, and deepen learning from face-to-face professional
‘evelopment workshops. These online discussions are moderated by trained focus group
facilitators and consistently recelve strong reviews from participants and clients, In his
presentation, Dr. Hatten will present the results of a three-day online discussion he
moderated that included a group of SEE-member school superintendents, He will share
the results of the discussion, talk about how the discussions take place, and offer
possible other uses for this methodology in school districts. Dr, Hatten will also touch
base on what he sees as the best model for online professional development in PK-12
and community education,
Dr. Hatten carries a PhO in Curriculum and Instruetion with an emphasis in Learning
‘Technologies from the University of Minnesota and is a former high schoo!
English/Language Arts teacher and former professional newspaper journalist. He has
conducted over 60 online focus group discussions in educational research with aver 350
participants. Amang educational researchers, he is considered a leader in online large-
scale qualitative data gathering
