3(b) _The relationship between member actions, q, and global actions, Q, is
q=[By:B2] Q where Q includes the redundants X.
Determine the size of these matrices if all possible actions are
considered.
Using the notation shown and the primary structure chosen as most
suitable in part (a), calculate the terms in By for the actions in the X
and Y directions at joint C (ONLY) and the terms in Bg for each of
the redundant actions. Assemble these terms in the B matrix.
[DO NOT attempt to complete the remainder of the By matrix.

Question 4 (Total 15 Marks)
Write notes, demonstrating your understanding and experience, on the key issues
associated with structural analysis modelling of the bridge structure shown in the
photographs of Figure 4(a) and 4(b).
Sketch the structural model indicating nodes and members and show details such
as support types and member end releases as appropriate. What loading cases
should be considered? 1
Note: Make reasonable assumptions for any details which are not clearly shown in
photographs.
The deck is concrete - with a varying depth across the width and along the length as shown in
the figure.
The pier under the deck and the central column above are concrete.
‘The cable supports are anchored through the central column at the top and into anchors cast
into the deck (note that the lower ends are shrouded in stainless steel covers to protect from
moisture and vandals!)Curtin University of Technology

6(b)
6(c)
Identify three independent collapse mechanisms of the frame and loading
shown in Figure 6.
For any ONE (1) of these mechanisms calculate the plastic moment
capacity M, needed to ensure that the structure will not collapse when the
loads shown are applied.
(10 marks)
Sketch the collapse mechanisms for all combinations of the three
mechanisms identified in 6(a).
Use any ONE (1) of these combinations to find an additional estimate of the
plastic moment capacity Mp.
(10 marks)
Choose the most likely of the three mechanisms you examined in 6(a) and
6(b) and draw the bending moment diagram for the structure. Use this
bending moment diagram to confirm or improve your estimate of the plastic
moment capacity My required for this structure.
