Introduction

Demonstrate an understanding of word association, while

leaning a new and elite form of poetry.
Students will:
Be able to choose words that are appropriate in the
context of the overarching theme.
Since they havent focused greatly on poetry as a
branch of Language Arts, the students will be able to
define just one form of poetry.
By confirming that the students are critically associating
words to the theme provided for them, this will show me they
have achieved the necessary skill of word association.
Additionally, if the students are able to accomplish the task
in an independent manner, this will show me they were
paying attention, and were therefore engaged in my
teaching. This independence also shows me that they have in
fact learned about Diamante Poems. Since the topic is quite
unfamiliar to the students, the relation between Diamante
Poems and the shapes that the students have already
learned, helps bridge the gap - making the topic appear not
as far away, or strange, but instead something achievable in
the form of a task.
Fill in blanks worksheet.
White, Smart, or Black Board.

Since the students have had little time to work with

poetry, I will start by teaching them a diverse, yet
relatable form.
As I explain the concepts behind the Diamante, I will be

sure to include many examples on the board.

I will keep the students engaged by asking them to
help me finish my examples, as well as asking them
many questions to test any prior knowledge on the
topic.
I will hand out the first set of work sheets (Diamante)
Students are required to fill in one word per line,
creating a diamond shape. They must choose words
that have to do with the theme: Memories of Grade 2
with Mrs. Packham.
If some students finish their Diamante poems before
others, they can simply make another and pick their
own topic. This second half of the activity sharpens
their creativity. I will set goals for them, like getting
them to try to make their own Diamante poem without
my help (independence).
Have the students share their individually created
poems!
