Authors
*African/African American
Virginia Hamilton - A renowned author of African American stories for children
and young adults.
Julius Lester - An African American reporter, who has written many stories for
both children and adults.

*Asian/Asian American
Ken Mochizuki - Primarily writes about Japanese and Japanese-Americans in
both fiction and non-fiction. He has written four picture books and two Young
Adult book.
Janet Wong - Writes wonderful stories and poems for children.
Lawrence Yep - A Chinese-American author who primarily writes of the
Chinese-American experience for young adults. He has won two Newbery
Honors.
Marie G. Lee - Writes for both children and young adults based on her Korean
American experience.
Humble Comics - The website of Gene Luen Yang, graphic novel artist and
writer and winner of the Printz award for 2006 for American Born Chinese.
Cynthia Kadohata - A Japanese-American author who writes young adult fiction.
She is a Newbery Award winner.
Allen Say - A Japanese-American author known not only for his stories of the
Japanese experience, but for his accompanying illustrations that range from
whimsical to lifelike. Winner of the Caldecott Medal.

Linda Sue Park - Korean-American children's author and winner of the 2002
Newbery Award for A Single Shard.

*Latino
Gary Soto - Award winning author and poet who writes much about the Latino
experience. A National Book Award Finalist.
Julia Alvarez - An author who writes everything from novels to poetry to
children's books from a Latino perspective.
Pat Mora - A Latina author who is especially well known for her children's
books, though she also writes for adults.

*Native American
Cynthia Leitich Smith - A member of the Creek nation, she is a relatively new
author who writes in a variety of genres for both children and young-adults from
a Native American Perspective.
Joseph Bruchac - An Abenaki storyteller who has written for a wide variety of
audiences in a wide variety of genres, including picture books.

*General
Tomie de Paola - A well-known children's author, notable as much for his
illustrations as his stories which often touch on multicultural themes.
Hoobler Authors.com - Dorothy & Thomas Hoobler write primarily historical
novels for young adults, and a samurai detective story.
Kim Antieau - An author of young adult fiction and an essayist.

Illustrators
Tomie de Paola - A well-known children's author, notable as much for his
whimsical illustrations as his stories which often touch on multicultural themes.

Ral Coln - An illustrator with an earthy tone.


Ana Juan - She uses a very Mexican traditional style which often features
creatures from Mexican folk-lore.
Charlotte Riley-Webb - An illustrator with a slightly surreal bent.
Kam Makb - This illustrator is more realistic, but almost has an impressionistic
touch.
Chris K. Soentpiet - An illustrator whose painings are usually very luminecent.
Allen Say - A Japanese-American author known not only for his stories of the
Japanese experience, but for his accompanying illustrations that range from
whimsical to lifelike. Winner of the Caldecott Medal.
Jim LaMarche - An author and illustrator of children's books, who combines the
fantastic with the realistic in his illustrations.

who has participated in presidential inaugurations.
Nikki Giovanni - Another popular African-American poet.
Langston Hughes - An African-American poet from the Harlem Renaissance.
Naomi Shihab Nye - An award-winning Arab-American poet and author. A
National Book Award finalist. She also as a letter to would-be-terrorists.
Janet Wong - An author of stories and poems for children.
Gary Soto - An award winning author and poet who writes primarily about the
Latino experience.
