Title of Lesson: Creating a Table with Newspaper (Problem Solving)

Curriculum Outcome:
Students will be expected to design, evaluate, and articulate technological solutions
Conduct design studies to identify a technological solution to a problem
Investigate related solution
Document a range of options to solve the problem
Determine and justify the best option
Create a plan of action that includes technical sketches
Develop (prototype, fabricate, make) technological solutions to problems
Identify appropriate tools and resources
Employ safe practices and resource conservation
Develop the solution with redesign as necessary to ensure the design brief is satisfied
Document all activities and decisions

Resources:
Newspapers
Masking Tape

PowerPoint with instruction
and questions to guide them.
Instructional Strategies/ Procedure for the Class:
Intro/Warm-up: Students will do their marble runs which they completed the previous class
with their previous teacher.
Time:10 minutes

Knowledge Content: Introduce their next task. Building a table made of newspaper which can
support holding a heavy book (choose a fairly heavy book students can use for testing their
tables). Instructions and questions to consider will be posted on the board. Can use cardboard

as the top of your table only. Bring up Power Point page. (Provide any clarification needed
from first class)
Time:15 minutes
Activities: Students can work on the tables for the rest of the class. Each student must make
their own table.
Time:30 minutes
Close: Give them a warning so they can clean up the area.
Time:5 minutes
Differentiation: Teacher is there to help. No previous knowledge is needed. It is trial and
error.

Your Challenge
Design and build a table out of newspaper tubes. Make it at least eight inches tall and strong
enough to hold a heavy book.
Your Material

Masking Tape

Newspaper

Cardboard (as your table top only)

Brainstorm & Design

Look at your Materials and think about the questions below. Then sketch your ideas on a piece of
paper,

How can you make a strong tube out of a piece of newspaper?

How can you arrange the tubes to make a strong, stable table?

How can you support the table legs to keep them from tilting or twisting?

How level and big does the table's top need to be to support a heavy book?
