    Denim originated from fabric called serge that was made in Nimes, France and was originally called "serge de Nimes." The first denim trousers were made in Genoa, Italy and this is where the word "jeans" comes from. Over time, denim evolved from sturdy workwear to a fashion staple embraced by youth culture. Techniques like stone washing in the 1970s resulted in denim being available in different shades and styles. Today, denim is produced by various brands and comes in many products beyond just jeans.
