KWL CHART - Electricity

Be sure to bullet your list.
Use content words only (nouns, verbs, names of people and places, dates, numbers, etc.).

KWL

Using a
chart like the one below is useful to help you think
through your project; it also shows what you have gained as a result of
your efforts!
There are three parts to the KWL:

1.

WHAT DO I

KNOW?

Once your topic or problem has been assigned, your first

step is to list everything you already know about the topic or problem. Use
bullets and content words only.
There are two reasons to list what you already know:
1. writing down what you already know will
help you write questions about what you need to find out
2. writing down what you already know will
make it clear later exactly what information needs to be cited; in
other words, you can avoid plagiarizing
Example: What do I know about the Underground Railroad?

2.

WANT TO KNOW?
WHAT DO I WANT TO SOLVE?
WHAT DO I

or

Now that youve figured out what you already know about
your topic or problem, youll be able to brainstorm some questions that will
help guide your reading.
As youre reading, you may have other questions pop up- be
sure to read with a pen or pencil in your hand so you can record your
questions as they come up.
Example: What do I want to know about the Underground Railroad?

WHAT HAVE I EARNED?

After youve finished your assignment, jot down the most
memorable things you have learned while researching your topic or
problem. Why were they memorable?
You can also compare what youve learned to your want to
know/solve questions. Have you satisfied your curiosity?

- There are two parts
which make an atom, the first
part is the inner part/nucleus,
which contains a set of
neutrons and protons, and the
second part is the outer
part/electron field, which
contains a set of electrons
which are in a form of a field

objects/apparatus are rubbed
together and causes friction to
occur between them, which
results on both becoming a
charged object, either
negatively charged or
positively charged.
- Real life examples of
static electricity are rubbing a
balloon against your head
rapidly, which causes the
balloon to be electrically
charged, and putting it near to
some small pieces of paper, &
rubbing a rubber jacket and a
cotton jacket, which makes
them both electrically
charged, and then someone
wearing one of them.

different electrical charges,
theyll attract each other. This
principle uses the same
principle of magnetic poles.
- In a conductor,
electrons can move freely
from particle to particle

- Active
During this unit and research, Ive
learned to become a more active
and hard-working person by doing
my assignments/tasks with my
best possible effort and work, by
getting involved in many class and
group discussions, and also being
actively collaborative and
cooperative towards my group
when theres a group

- How does
electrons move from one atom to
another?
During this unit and
research, Ive learned that
electrons could move from one
atom to another by the process of
attraction of the atoms that
requires an electron or electrons,
usually positive ions for
stabilizing the atom, which
happens when two or more atoms
are close towards each other.
-

What is Current
Electricity?
During this unit
and research, Ive learned that
current electricity is the form of
electricity where the electricity is
generated by the electrical current,
which usually flows throughout an
electric circuit. In simple terms,
its a form of energy thats selfgenerated.
- What are the main
differences and similarities of
Static and Current Electricity?
During this unit and research, Ive
learned that a major difference
between static and current
electricity is that in static
electricity, the electrical energy
will just happen in an instant and
then disappears, while in current

meanwhile, electrons cant
move freely from particle to
particle throughout it because
insulators are materials that
doesnt willingly conduct
electricity and doesnt easily
allow electricity to flow
through it.
- The examples of
insulators of electricity are
glass, plastic, wood, rubber,
paper, ebonite, cotton, oil,
asphalt, paper, & air.
- Positive ions are
atoms which have more
amount of protons than
electrons, while electron ion
are the opposite of that,
which have more amount of
electrons and protons. A
normal atom though are
atoms which are neutral or
doesnt have a dominant

charges, they both work with
insulators & conductors & they
both make electrical energy.
- What are real-life
examples/applications of Current
Electricity and their functions?

phone, and playing video games
are real-life applications/examples
of Current Electricity.
- Why do we use
Current Electricity rather than
Static Electricity to power our
cities?
During
this unit and research, Ive learned
that we use current electricity as
the type of electricity we generate
to power our cities because its the
type of electricity that has a
continuous flow of energy when
generated and the type of
electricity that creates way bigger
amounts of energy comparing to
static electricity.
- What are the main
differences and similarities of
conductors and insulators?
During this unit and research, Ive
learned that the major difference
between them are that an insulator
is a material, which resists the
flow of electric current,
meanwhile conductors are
materials, which electric current
doesnt resist and could flow
through easily. The main
similarities between them are that

- What are the main
differences and similarities of
series circuits and parallel
circuits?
During this unit
and research, Ive learned that the
main difference between them is
that in series circuits, all of the
components are connected along a

have the same amount of electric
current flowing through all the
components. While in parallel
circuits, all of the components are
connected along different and
aligned pathways, which causes it
to have the same amount of
voltage flowing thats applied to
each component. The main
similarities between them are that
theyre both a type of arrangement

learned that a load (a device
which uses the electrical energy),
a power source (usually batteries
and cells), and wires are the main
components, while the electronic
components, such as resistors,

- What is Electrical
Energy? During this unit and
research, Ive learned that
electrical energy is energy thats
carried by mobile electrons in an
electric conductor, its also
regarded as the energy thats been
newly derived from electrical
potential energy.
- What is Electrical

- What are the main
differences and similarities of
electric and electronic circuits?
During this unit and research, Ive
learned that the main difference
between them is that electric
circuit usually use/utilize AC
(Alternating Current) sources,
while electronic circuits usually
use/utilize low-voltage DC (Direct
Current) sources. The main
similarities between them are that
they are both a type of electrical
circuit, they both use current

- What is electrical
resistance and its units?
During this unit and research,
Ive learned that electrical
resistance is the measurement of
an electronic components
(resistors, transistors, inductors,
etc.) opposition towards an
electron flow and electric
current flow in an electric
circuit. The SI unit of electrical
resistance is Ohms (), which
was named after a german
physicist, Georg Simon Ohm.
- What is electrical voltage
and its units?
During this unit and research, Ive
learned that electrical voltage or
voltage is the unit which forces
the electric current (I) from the
power source towards the user.
There are two different types of
electrical voltage, theyre:
Electromotive Force (E.M.F.) and
Potential Difference (P.D.). The SI
unit of voltage is volts (V).
- What are examples of
other scientific instruments which
measure values of electricity?
During this unit and research, Ive

measuring Electrical Potential),
Ohmmeter (for measuring
Electrical Resistance),
Galvanometer (for measuring
Electric Current) & Electroscope
(for detecting the presence of
electric charges).

learned that the Ohms Law and
the Kirchhoff's Law are the laws
that are used for measuring the
values of an electric circuit. The
Ohms law is the law that was
founded by german physicist,
Georg Simon Ohm. This law
states that I = V/R, R = V/I & V =
I x R, where I = Electric Current
(Ampere), V = Voltage (Volt) and
R = Electrical Resistance (Ohm).
The Kirchhoffs Law, meanwhile,
is the law that was founded by
another german physicist, Gustav
Robert Kirchhoff. This law states
that I in = I out, or Electric
Current which goes in the electric
circuit, will have the same amount
as the Electric Current which goes
out of it.
