Reflective Paper for EDUC 525

Items That Stood Out To Me


Within the Multimedia Instructional Design Class at Drexel (EDUC 525), I was given multiple
opportunities to grow in my learning for not only how to use various multimedia tools, but most
importantly how to make these tools available and useful for my students; some of the most
prominent items that stood out to me where the assignment for the audio element, graphic
element, and animation element. Each of these was new for me, so I found that I spent extra
time learning and developing these elements.
I also found that following the DDD-E (Decide, Design, Develop, and Evaluate) format was very
useful and again new for me. This was/is the first time that I have had the opportunity to learn
and apply this model. Through my work with my very attentive and capable group, this model
seemed to naturally flow from one step to the next.
Discoveries Made
Outside of the obvious learning about and applying new technologies, I was happily startled to
find my group working so well together. This was a first for me, and from what I can tell, for my
fellow group members. Each of us has had the foul experience of being the key and often only
person on the group team doing the actually work. In this group, Group 1, we each brought our
own abilities and drive to the table. This made any/all assignments learned on an increased
learning potential.
Applications to Teaching and/or Training & Using Media Tools to Facilitate Learning
Several things can be applied from this EDUC 525 class experience. These range from
multimedia applications, creating a productive group working environment, and being accessible
to students.
Multimedia applications are not something I have been comfortable using in the past. Now that I
have exposure and some basic understandings of how each of these types is used, I plan to
incorporate them into my teaching. As I currently teach preschool, current applications will be
limited; but, I am seeking to teach basic mathematics for the community colleges, upon
completion with Drexel. There I can already see many different formats for usage of multimedia
with the community college.

Creating a productive group working environment is a difficult task. Often teachers assume by
grouping random students together and then assigning a task, the group will come together and
complete the task. This is often not the case. Within this EDUC 525 class, we were grouped
according to our abilities and our weaknesses. This made for our group especially, the ease of
each person to bring out, contribute, and lead; as well as ask, need assistance, and learn from
each member of the group. Knowing this model, I plan to use it currently with my preschoolers
and as well as in my future with my community college students.
Being accessible to students is something each teacher strives to achieve. It is also something
that give busy life, work, and the world around us, is often missed. I am pleased to say that our
professor made herself available to us. It seemed that her availability increased throughout the
term.
NETS Standards: Where Do I Stand?
When comparing to the NETS Standards, or as now known as the ISTE Standards, I think that I
am strong in some and a novice in others. Being that I have 15 years of teaching experience,
facilitating and inspiring students comes naturally; as well as engaging professional growth and
development. Designing/Developing digital age learning experiences, modeling digital age work
and learning, modeling digital citizenship and responsibility are all things I know have the
knowledge to do, but am still new to this idea. Therefore I will need increased practice in these
areas.
Multiple Intelligences Relating to Multimedia Learning Design
When the DDD-E process is applied, it is automatically using different intelligences. As each
step of the DDD-E process is executed, one, if not more, types of multiple intelligences are
achieved. For example, in the Design and Decide phases the Linguistic and Logical Intelligences
are engaged; in the Develop Phase, the Intrapersonal and Interpersonal intelligences are applied
(if working in a group); and in the Evaluate phase, the Logical Intelligence is applied. These
intelligences can change and often do change based on the group/person.
