Learner-Centered Teaching

Educational practitioners are faced consistently with the task of

providing increased opportunities for engaging students in
beneficial online learning. The learner's perception of herself as
a valued contributor in the learning community is a key
component. The "a-ha" moment often occurs when learners
recognize that they are knowledge generators, not only for
themselves, but also for the community as a whole.
~ Donaldson, Phases of Engagement re...)
Learner-Centered teaching means the student is at the
center of learning. The student assumes the responsibility
for learning while the instructor is responsible for
facilitating the learning. Thus, the power in the classroom
shifts to the student.

Quality Matters

Quality Matters is an organization of educators who have established a nationally recognized

set of standards (rubric) for the design of online and blended courses. The Quality Matters
Rubric comprises 8 core standards:

Course Overview and Introduction | Learning Objectives

Assessment and Measurement | Instructional Materials
Learner Interaction and Engagement | Course Technology|
Learner Support | Accessibility

The QM Rubric has been reviewed and approved by MA Colleges Online (MCO). The Rubric
serves as an effective set of standards both for online course evaluation and for faculty
professional development in online course design.
Design of the QM Rubric is centered on:

research - the development of the rubric is based in national standards of best

practice, the research literature, and instructional design principles.
student learning - the rubric and process are designed to promote student learning.
quality - the review sets a quality goal at the 85% level or better (courses do not have
to be perfect but better than good enough).
