Directions: Include an Entry Form for each artifact and respond to the following prompts.
Question 1: What is the artifact? Identify the artifact (case study, PowerPoint presentation, field evaluation,
lesson plan, unit, video, literature review, or other) and give a brief narrative description.
The artifact chosen for standard six is a letter to a teacher and parents about a students progress and growth
made during an extracurricular reading program. I worked with a single student after school a few times a
week to work on reading fluency and comprehension. After several weeks of working with this student I was
able to determine his reading level and comprehension level. This allowed me to determine what the next
steps would be for remediation. Once all of my data was collected, I wrote a letter to the students teacher as
well as his parents informing them of my study and the results.
Question 2: How does the artifact relate to the OSTP standard? Use language of the standard to explain how
it relates.
This artifact relates to the standard because it shows communication with parents as well as other teachers.
Teachers do communicate with students, parents, and other educators. I worked with a student for several
weeks after school. I effectively communicated with this student throughout the entire process. He always
knew what was expected of him. The letter home is an example of sharing responsibility with parents and
caregivers to support student learning and development. On the other hand, the letter to the teacher is a
collaboration to share results and help improve the student learning. Effective communication between
teachers and parents is essential for student development and learning.
Question 3: What have you learned from the artifact experience that will make you a better teacher in the
future?
This experience has taught me that communication between students, parents, other educators, and
administration is extremely important if you want to give each student the best chance for success. To get
the best learning experience, everyone needs to be on the same page working towards the same goal.
Effective communication with the parents can create an ally/partner at home and continue with the
appropriate instruction to help students reach their full potential. The goal is to create a seamless
complementary learning experience. The teacher can only do so much in the little bit of time the students are
working with them. It takes the committed actions of both families and schools working together to support
student success.
