ASS 1, Q1: What was the state of Germany prior to Hitler coming to power?

in Weimar Germany. Particularly detrimental in connection with the harsh provisions of

Box 2 EV2:Burdensome reparations imposed after World War I, coupled with a general

inflationary period in Europe in the 1920sanother direct result of a materially

catastrophic warcaused spiraling hyperinflation of the German Reichsmark by 1923.
This hyperinflationary period combined with the effects of the Great Depression
(beginning in 1929) to seriously undermine the stability of the German economy,
wiping out the personal savings of the middle class and spurring massive
unemployment.

ASS 1, Q2: How did Hitler gain support of the people?
Box 3 EV1: The Nazi Party was attractive to the majority of the German people because
Hitler and his party proposed a solution to nearly every problem that was facing the various
segments of the population. For example, the Party agenda addressed the problem of
Germanys loss of WWI. The Nazis exploited the popular myth that Germanys army was
stabbed in the back by the Weimar Republics first politicians. In this way they seduced the
German people into associating the loss of the war with Democracy.

he used this for political gain, blaming the Jews, often a scapegoat in European history, for
many of the woes of the twenties and promising to tear up the terms of the hated treaty of
versailles. Whilst other groups also made similar claims, Hitler's party achieved a higher level
of credibility amongst the German public by putting some of their rhetoric into action. The SA
were deployed to break up communist meetings: which won the approval of a very nervous
middle class. he made promises to farmers about the quality of life, guarantee of earning and
with regards their social status. Ex-soldiers were won over by the militaristic images that Hitler
used: and his promise of tearing up the Treaty of Versailles and restoring the forces to their
previous size won acclaim from many former servicemen.

ASS 1, Q3: How did Hitler solidify power?
Box 5 EV1:To achieve full political control despite not having an absolute majority in
parliament, Hitler's government brought the Ermchtigungsgesetz (Enabling Act) to a vote in
the newly elected Reichstag. The Act gave Hitler's cabinet full legislative powers for four years
and (with certain exceptions) allowed deviations from the constitution. The bill required a twothirds majority to pass. Leaving nothing to chance, the Nazis used the provisions of the
Reichstag Fire Decree to keep several Social Democratic deputies from attending; the
Communists had already been banned.

Assertion 2 Idea: Hitlers Maintenance of Power

ASS 2, Q1: How did Hitler use his military to maintain control/expand his reign?
Box 7 EV1:
In the first phase of World War II in Europe, Germany sought to avoid a long war. Germany's
strategy was to defeat its opponents in a series of short campaigns. Germany quickly overran
much of Europe and was victorious for more than two years by relying on anew military tactic
called the "Blitzkrieg" (lightning war). Blitzkrieg tactics required the concentration of offensive
weapons (such as tanks, planes, and artillery) along a narrow front. These forces would drive
a breach in enemy defenses, permitting armored tank divisions to penetrate rapidly and roam,
but they used the money that they did not put towards the treaty of versailles to get there
weapons.

Box 8 EV2:Hitler used terror to get into power, once in power he used it against the christian
churches in the 1930's to weaken their opposition. Once that was done he was thought by
and loved by most Germans as a great leader until the war started to go badly. He maintained
"control" by using propaganda.In Germany of the time there were more than one police force
with some reporting to the Nazis, the same was true of the military. The Nazi
controlled/operated police and military branches were used to control dissent. But Hitler did
not use terror to "keep control" over Germany but to deal with dissenters and those that may
have interfered with his authority.

Box 9 EV1: people knew that if they foul-mouthed Hitler they would either end up dead or in a
concentration camps (which was meant you were as good as dead) the first concentration
camp that was first setup was called Dachau is was set up in 1934 Hitler sent all trade
unionists , other party leaders and anyone who he didnt like.

Box 10 EV2:The first method of keeping complete control was through the use of TERROR he
gave the Gestapo (German police) complete control so they could just arrest someone and
throw them in jail for no reason at all!! He also used the S.S. (shooting squad) these were
Hitlers personal army they started of as Hitlers bodyguards but he expanded them so that
they could wipe out the brown shirts

ASS 3, Q1: When did things begin to go terribly wrong for Hitler?

Box 11 EV1:ill prepared for the Russian winters:The Germans and Hitler had underestimated
the Russian Winters. The army was ill equipped for the winter. There was sharp scarcity of
winter clothes, food and medical care. Of course maximum casualties were attributed to the
war of Stalingrad, but other than that many had given in to the harsh weather conditions. By
the end, the army had lost most of its young soldiers to the grip of the prolonged winter.

According to Dr. Pauwels, the turning point was not Stalingrad but the Battle of Moscow and

Adolf Hitler killed himself by gunshot on 30 April 1945 in his Fhrerbunker in Berlin. His wife
Eva (ne Braun) committed suicide with him by taking cyanide. That afternoon, in accordance

with Hitler's prior instructions, their remains were carried up the stairs through the bunker's
emergency exit, doused in petrol, and set alight in the Reich Chancellery garden outside the
bunker. Records in the Soviet archives show that their burnt remains were recovered and
interred in successive locations until 1970, when they were again exhumed, cremated, and
the ashes scattered.
