3.MD.7c Area and Distributive Property

Use tiling to show in a concrete case that the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths a an

Do Now (3-5 minutes)

I will display this problem on the board

They will have to find the length and width and the area independently

Opening (3-5 minutes)

During our do now we set up a problem using the distributive property. Today we will be

given diagrams, and we will have to find the area. We will use the distributive property
strategy to help us find the area.

I do (5 minute limit):
Pose the question
8X12 to students
Is it easy to multiple by 12s?
NO
We will use the distributive property to help solve the problem.
So lets think of two numbers that we know our multiplication
fact that equal the sum of 12.
Write all possible solutions. Debate which solution we would
know ur facts the easiest.
(2+10)= 12
Now we can rewrite our equation like
8 X (12) = 8X (2+10)
So lets take the problem that we did during our do now
8x12.
We first found our first step which was finding two numbers
that break down 12, that we know our multiplication facts
easiest.
8x 12 = ?
8 x 12 = 8 x (10 + 2)
8 x 12 = (8 x 10) + (8 x 2)
8 x 12 = ____ + ____
8 x 12= _______

I do (board=paper):

We do (guided practice):
5x 16=?
Talk about what numbers would be easiest to break apart 16
into two facts that we know.
5x16= 5x (____ + ____)
5x16= (5x____) + (5x_____)
5x16= _____ + ______
5x16= __________

7x15?
7x15= 7x (____ + ____)
7x15= (7x____) + (7x_____)
7x15= _____ + ______
7x15= __________
Exit ticket will be by hand
Will provide an area,
they will have to break up the area into two regions, use the
format to solve and color in the two different areas.
