Aptitude Shortcuts and Mind tricks for Percentage Problems | Download in PDF:
Aptitude Shortcuts methods and formulas that used in aptitude questions related to
Percentage were given below. Candidates those who are preparing for IBPS PO/Clerk,
SBI and all other competitive exams can use this.

A. What is Percentage:
Percent is a term having meaning for every hundred. Suppose, a man says that he
gains forty percent (40%) profit after selling a watch. It means his profit is Rs forty for
every hundred rupees.
In other words, a fraction with 100 as denominator is called a percentage. So, due to
this definition of the percentage, the meaning of 40 percent is

40
100

Denotation of percent:
Percent = P.C. = %
e.g., 40 percent = 40%
B. To convert percentage into Fraction:
Process: (i) Given value/term is divided by 100.
(ii) Sign of percent (%) is eliminated/ removed.
:.

Fraction=

Rule:

E.g., value in percentage = process (

C. To convert fraction into percentage:
Process: (i) Fraction is multiplied by 100.
(ii) Result (fraction 100) takes sign of percent (%) after it.
Therefore, Rule:
Value in %= (fraction
100) %
E.g.,
Value in fraction

To apply rule

Value in percent

(fraction 100)%
1.

(25100) % 16%

D. To Convert Percentage into Decimal:

Process: (i) Given value (in percent) is divided by 100 and we take result in
decimal.
(ii) Sign of percent (%) is eliminated.
E.g.,
Value in percent
1. 25%

Using Process
25
100

Value in Decimal

= 0.25

Rule: Short-cut method to convert percentage into decimal: Decimal is placed

at two digit from right to left side in given value eliminating sign of percent (%).
E.g., (1) 25%

According to rule decimal will take place after two digits (5 and 2) from right
to left. Thus decimal value of 52% will be 0.25.
E. To Convert Decimal into Percentage:
Process: (i) Given value is multiple by 100.
(ii) Sign of percent (%) is added after that product.
Process in ruled form:
Value in percent = (value in Decimal
)100%
E.g.,
Value in Decimal

Applying Rule

1. 0.35

(0.35 100)%

F. Miscellaneous:

Y% of x = 100
Memorable Point:

If y% of x =z, then 100 = z

Value in percent
35%

In above mathematical relation, there are three terms e.g. x, y and z. If
values of any two terms are known then we can obtain value of rest term, as
given below,

(i)

X = 100

Y = 100

Z= 100

Example (1)
12% of 240 =?
(1) 28.8 (2) 4.8 (3) 2.88 (4) 1.2 (5) None

Answer: (1)

Explanation:

12% of 240 =
