String Art- Foundations


Class: Foundations class in an art room
Time Needed:
a. Day 1- Discussion about project and power point with examples of different string
art ideas. Computer lab to print out picture of idea.
b. Day 2- Start stringing
c. Day 3- Finish stringing if needed
Art Background Related to the Lesson:
Subject: The subject of this lesson is to teach the students about string art to wind down after our
more intensive projects. This lesson is just meant to be fun for the students. They will be
working with wood and hammers and nails to create a string picture of something that is of
interest to them.
Supplies:

Various sizes of scrap wood for students to choose from


Pencils
Erasers
Hammers
Nails
Various colors of string or embroidery floss
Acrylic paint
Paintbrushes

Objectives:

Creative Skills
After looking at examples of string art, the students will come up with
their own idea for their string art project
Craftsmanship Skills

o Students will demonstrate good craftsmanship when they are creating their
string art. The nails need to be hammered straight, and the picture has to be
precise so that people will know what their image is.
o The students are expected to be neat when painting their background of the
wood.
Content Standards:
From the Ohio Department of Education 2012 Visual Art Standards:
1.

2PE: Analyze factors that influence artwork.


Students will be looking at different examples of string art, and they will
pick an idea based on an influence of what they like or are interested in.
2.
1PR: Demonstrate advanced technical skills and craftsmanship
with various art media when creating images from observation,
memory or imagination.
Students will need to show good skills and techniques when working with
wood and nails to create a fun piece of artwork
State Standards in Other Disciplines:
1. English/ Language Arts Standards:
Acquisition of Vocabulary- Students will learn new vocabulary words
while doing this lesson, and they will be using them in the future.

Communication: Oral and Visual Standards- Students will be


communicating with their peers while having a class discussion about a
particular piece of artwork that they will be analyzing and describing.

Learner Outcomes:
Students will successfully create their own string art piece
Students will follow correct procedures for creating their string art piece
Safety Considerations: Be very careful when working with nails and hammers and keep
fingers out of the way best possible. There is a nurse in building if there is a major issue. Be
careful of getting splinters- nurse can remove if necessary.
Alternatives to the Lesson: When students are finished working, they could create another
string art of a different subject

Procedure: Introduction:
Day 1:
a. Motivation- I will show the students my sample. We will learn about the process
of creating string art and talking about wrapping the string. The students will be
looking at different examples of string arts and generating ideas for their project.
Day1: talking about string art and looking at examples, learning the process
and a demonstration of how to start
Day 2: Start stringing
Day 3: continue working on pieces if needed

c. Teacher-pupil appraisal of activity- The students work quality will show how well
I taught this lesson. I will ask questions as the students are cleaning up to see how
well they were paying attention.
Teacher Evaluation: I will know if the goals were accomplished based on student success
of the project. I will know if the students followed the directions and were listening based on
how their project turns out.
