Program Goals
For the English component of the class, the goals are to see you
read, write, speak, view, listen and represent to:
- explore thoughts, feelings, ideas and experiences,
- comprehend and respond critically and personally to oral,
print and other media texts,
- manage ideas and information,
- create oral, print, visual and multimedia texts and enhance the
clarity and artistry of communication,
- respect, support and collaborate with others.
For the Drama component of the class, the goals are to
encourage you to:
- acquire a knowledge of self and others through participation in
and reflection upon dramatic experiences,
- develop competency in communication skills through
participation and exploration of various dramatic disciplines,
- appreciate drama and theatre as a process and an art form.

The Course Outline


Timeline and Key Focus Material: This course will move very quickly and
require you to manage your 5me extremely wisely. We are working through
two courses worth of material at the same 5me, so expect to be working on
two or more assignments at once! Informa5on on major assignments and
their due dates for the en5re course are available upon request if you want
to get a head start.
Shakespeare - Twelfth Night
- The comedic genius of Shakespeare will have you consider the major themes
of gender roles, loyalty, and literary techniques like irony.

absolutely cri4cal as much of what we
will do in this class cannot be put on a
handout. Students who miss class tend
to struggle with the con5nuity of their
learning. Try to come in comfortable
and appropriate clothing (please avoid
skirts).

- A full production will require your dramatic skills in movement, speech and
acting.

drama as we know it today.

Film Study (various films)


- Critically analyzing films will expand your ability as a 21st century learner.
- Close attention will be paid to viewing films through the lens of theatre
studies and techniques.
Theatre Studies and History (research topic of your choosing)

- Researching and writing a thorough expository paper.


Novel Study (Flowers for Algernon)
- A novel with extremely complex ideas and themes, including intolerance,
prejudice and humanity.

- Adapting the novel for the stage and developing characters for theatre will

Course Evaluation: You will receive a mark in English and Drama separately.

Expectations
Certain schedules will be used in class
to ensure we cover all of the material
thoroughly. The activities listed below
will be weekly/bi-weekly routines in our
class. All work completed at these
times can be used as formative and/or
summative assessment.
Make-it-up Monday: will be a
combination of Improv Workshops and
Personal Response Journal writing.
We-Read Wednesday: every other
Wednesday will present a new short
story, script, or non-fiction article,
which we will read, respond to and
evaluate.
reFlective Friday: journal about your
skills as an actor, your impressions as a
reader/writer, and the course in
general.

Regarding Drama
For your drama credits you
will be expected to complete
two final projects - one solo
and one group.
These projects need to
