The Scarlet Ibis

Brother decides he doesnt want an invalid brother, so he decided to do something about

it. Brother decides to teach Doodle. Throughout the story, Doodle will progress on his walking.
Pride was the cause of Doodles death, because Brothers personal gain was so important to
him.
Doodles death was caused from the high dignity of Brother, without Brother being so
prideful Doodle might of been alive. As Doodle fell, Brother left him continuing running from the
storm when he went back he seen, his head thrown back, making his vermillion neck
appear...unusually long and slim. (8) representing death imagery. The death is shown by the
textual evidence because it tells what Brother saw. Death imagery proves Doodles death
because it was describing what was seen by Brother. The words head thrown back...vermillion
neck...unusually long and slim show that Doodle was covered in blood while laying on the
ground, dead, which creates a sad, depressing mood at the end of the story. All throughout the
story, Doodle was trying to impress Brother and make him happy. When Doodle died it was
upsetting because all he did was try to make Brother happy but at the end he was in eternal rest
because of it. Imagery is important because it shows us what was seen which causes an
impact on the mood. Its important that James Hurst used this type of imagery because now the
readers on aware he died. I lay...crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis as Brothers heart
shattered while he held the lifeless body of Doodle (8) shows symbolism. Symbolism proves
the themed statement because Brother calls him a scarlet ibis, like the one that died. While the
textual evidence supports the assertion since the learning to walk and learning to do everything

else to lead up to when Doodle died. ...sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis is symbolism because
Brother was calling Doodle his scarlet ibis, Doodle isnt really a red bird it just means something.
Its important that the author used this because it shows how Brothers feelings for Doodle
changed by the end of the story, The effect that it has on the readers is that were able to
connect with how Brother feels about seeing his brother dead. This is an example because I
know that Doodle isnt really a scarlet ibis and hes using the bird as a symbol. It affects the
audience because it gives off the feels, since its heart warming but breaking at the same time.
Warming since hes mourning and protecting the body, breaking because of the death.
Although, he talks about Brothers personal gain had a lot to do with it because pride was the
cause of death, it was the main problem. Direct characterization is represented when, they did
not know that I did it for myself...Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of [him] (4) he
thought when Doodle told the family Brother taught him to walk. The textual evidence
proves the assertion statement, because it said he was ashamed. That explains
why he taught Doodle how to walk. The literary element proves the themed
statement by telling us that Brother was so consumed by his pride. It tells us that
he only did it for personal gain, which tells us what type of person he is. Brothers
pride directly shows that he is only doing things that help Doodle, like to walk. His
pride was the reason he helped, not because he wanted to but because Brother was
ashamed of Doodle. This affects the reader because now you are able to get a new
feeling for Brother, its effective since its known of what type of person he is and
the role he has over Doodle. Its an example because its direct, the quote directly
states that hes prideful. I know this because it says, ...I did it for myself, that
pride, whose slave I was that shows us that he is very prideful and isnt one who
likes his pride hurt. Working on their development program for Doodle, he didnt
feel good but, it was too...late...we...both wandered into a net of expectations and

left no crumbs behind. (5) shows an allusion. Working on their development

program for Doodle, on page 5 an allusion is shown when saying, It was too late...
we...both wandered too far...net of expectations and left no crumbs behind. The
textual evidence proves the assertion idea because he had taught Doodle to walk,
and was pushing him to far. It also works with the literary element because it refers
to Hanzel and Gretal about the bread crumbs. They both prove it since it tells us
why he did what he did. It was expected that hed get better so they kept working
on it so itd happen. The words, ...and left no crumbs behind. connects the two
stories, The Scarlet Ibis and Hanzel and Gretal. The feelings associated with this
comparison would be that they set a high goal and arent able to walk away from it,
they wont stop until they accomplish their goal. Its important that James Hurst
used the literary element, allusion because of the high goal and arent able to walk
away from it, they wont stop until they accomplish their goal. Its important that
James Hurst used the literary element, allusion because of the high expectations
that were set that they had no intention of going back on.
Throughout The Scarlet Ibis, Brother pushes Doodle to walk, to show how
pride controls a person. Paragraph 1 proves this, by showing the death of Doodle
from being pushed too hard. He learned only because Brother was embarrassed of
him. Pride controls people, making them do things to keep themselves from getting
embarrassed.
