Roche
Roche is a worldwide health care company with over 81,507 employees in 150 countries.
Each Roche office has training programs, similar to the Shanghai Roche Phara leadership
program. These programs emphasize leadership characteristics, but contain a mixture of
leadership and managerial features. For example, the people management skills and
functional management skills (Spotlight on Roche, 455) in the Leadership Impact program
clearly emphasize managerial characteristics, while in the Leadership Excellence program,
leadership qualities are emphasized, as is shown by the intent to do the right thing by
remain[ing] honest and transparent regarding the realities of their roles [and] provid[ing] each
other with support through peer networking (Spotlight on Roche, 455). Being both a good
manger but also a good leader is a bit hard but extremely important so it is good Roche has these
programs in place.
These programs help prospective leaders gain the ability to manage effectively in
different cultures through the Perspectives program. Perspectives provides a unique opportunity
to build a broad global network, experience different areas of the business, and gain skills that
will be necessary for a career in general management in an accelerated timeframe (Spotlight on
Roche, 455). Because candidates have fluency in two languages, global mindset and mobility,
strong leadership potential and business acumen, and excellent communication skills (Spotlight
on Roche, 455), they are well prepared to experience different cultures. The temporary contracts
and international assignments provide diver experiences, training, and development coaches that
ensure guidance and success for the perspective leader to get a feel for what their future would
be like, which also emphasizes the leadership characteristics of looking towards the future, as
compared to managers who see things only in the present.
To help in the development of these future leaders, Roche should understand the GLOBE
dimensions and leadership behaviors. Based upon the culture types (ex. affective or neutral
cultures) and a quantitative and qualitative analysis, GLOBE can determine the leadership
behaviors best for a certain culture. It can then be determined how to best lead them, based upon
which six GLOBE categories the leadership style fits into, making GLOBE an extremely helpful
study for international leaders in different cultures.
