Science Essay

John Ibanez p3

Physical science is a constant thing and it happens around us every day? Physical
science is a study of non-living things and it falls under the branch of natural science.
Physical science is a collection of things such as the periodic table of elements. The
periodic table of elements is a composition of elements arranged in the order of their
atomic number which is a symbol for the number of protons. Physical science also
contains a lot of secondary sections that apply to our life. Some examples would be the
action of standing up from your chair using force. Force being a push or pull. In the
creation of ice cubes, you slow down molecular movement which then results in the
physical state of a solid. Physical science is also present during the process of eating; to
get a different taste you can try adding lemon to get a sour taste, this sour taste is a result
of the acidity of the lemon.
States of matter depends on the molecular speed of a substance. The speed of a
molecule depends on the temperature it is exposed to. A faster molecular speed is a result
of exposure to a hotter temperature; its vice versa in terms of colder temperatures. Speed
also determines the structures of the substance, a faster speed results in a more free
molecular space, a slower speed means a more condense structure. All three factors
determine whether a substance is a solid, liquid, or gas. Though there are more than three
states of matter, these are the most common examples. Solids are the slowest of the three
of these states of matter, with tightly packed molecules that vibrate in place. A common
example of a solid is an ice cube. Liquids-the next in line-are a faster moving substance,
with molecules that move more freely and at a faster speed. The most common example
of this is water. The fastest of the three, gases move at the fastest speed simply because of
a hotter temperature that dissolves liquid and in turn excites the molecules and gives it a
larger mass to fill. States of matter is important when I want to turn a liquid like water to
a more solid and tightly packed substance such as ice, with knowledge of the states of
matter I know that in order to turn a liquid into a solid, I first have to expose the liquid to
a colder temperature which in turn slows down molecular movement and packs the
molecules into a more dense structure resulting in a solid ice cube. I also know that in
order for a solid substance like ice cream, not to melt, I have to expose it to colder
temperatures.

Did you know that a simple equation like distance divided by time can determine
your speed? This simple equation can determine data like average speed or if you want to
add direction to your average speed, velocity. An object can only have speed if it has
movement, which is the action of changing place or position. Speed is a measure of how
much distance is being covered in a certain amount of time. Speed is a concept that is
usually present in things that have a lot of movement. An example of speed would be a
car moving at the speed of 75 miles per hour / mph. Velocity is a similar concept to speed
but adds more description by adding direction. To find velocity you have to also find your
average speed but also add the direction of which the object is moving towards. An
example of velocity would be a car going Southbound on the 101 at a slow speed of 25
mph (usual LA traffic). Both velocity and speed is a constant part of my everyday life. I
use speed as a way to measure how fast I go on my bicycle. I use velocity to describe my
speed and direction to my parents (i.e. Im going 28 mph towards the beach)
Force is simply defined as a push or pull. Force is a result of an interaction
between two objects causing the object to become unbalanced. Once the interaction
begins, thats when the objects feel the force thats acting upon both of them. When the
interaction ends both of the objects go back to being a balanced force. There is also a rule
called Newtons first law which states an object at rest (no force/ balanced) stays at rest
unless acted upon by an unbalanced force (force/ unbalanced). The force exerted is also
measured by using a standard metric unit called Newtons (pound). The more newtons a
force has the stronger the act of unbalancing an object is. The heavier an object is the
more force is required to move or unbalance it. A common example of this is when an
object like a heavy-set couch is in need of moving. Due to its larger mass and weight, a
considerable amount of force is needed to unbalance or move the couch, in real life this
would call for an extra set of hands to unbalance and or move the couch. Another
scenario in which a considerable amount of force is used would be a scenario in which a
car is blocking a driveway, which calls for a tow truck. In order to successfully lift and
move the vehicle, the tow truck has a special tool that uses hydraulics called a boom or
sometimes called a winch. This hydraulic tool exerts more force than a normal human can
to lift an object that would otherwise be considered immovable without the help of
special tools.

On a Ph scale a substance earns the label of acidic, basic, or neutral. The Ph scale is
a numbered scale that use the numbers 0-14 to determine whether a substance is basic,
acidic, or neutral. 0 through 6 identifies the substance as an acidic substance. 8 through
14 are the levels of a basic substance. Neutrality comes when the Ph level is at a perfect
7. An acidic substance also is identifiable through some key characteristics. Acids have
the special ability to react with metals to give off hydrogen. Acids also have a more sour
taste and sometimes give off a foul smell. Some real life acidic examples would be
hydrochloric acid, lemons, and vinegar. Neutral substances are most of the time water.
Basic substances have a more bitter taste and have a slippery texture. Some real life
examples of basic substances are hand soap, baking soda, and an egg. There is also a
unique way to test a substances ph level using litmus paper. If the litmus paper turns a
certain color it can be identified as an acidic substance or a basic substance. The labels
acidic, basic, and neutral play an important role in my life because in scenarios such as
cleaning or doing laundry I can identify whether the cleaning solution Im using is either
acidic or basic. Another scenario in which it would be useful to know my ph levels would
be identifying how a substance would taste in a mixture with some food, for example
using lemons as an additive to the taste of noodles.
In summary, physical science is a constant thing that goes on in our lives every day.
Things such as getting up from your chair requires the necessary amount of force, in
order to create ice cubes you have to first freeze the water which in turns slows the
molecular movement and causes the water to transform into a solid, and velocity can be
useful for describing the movement of certain things. These are just some examples of
how you use physical science in your life, but if you look even closer youll see life
would be impossible without physical science
