Connections:

Plants
(Botanist) - Do you like to grow things and experiment? Botany is the scientific study of plants, including their physiology, structure,
and importance. Botanists are the scientists who study plants. In this group you will be acting like botanists and looking at what
kinds of plants we would need to keep Mars settlers alive. How will we grow these plants? Where will we grow these plants? We
will be using research and the scientific method to test our theories.
Skills:
Good at testing
Maybe has some experience working with plants but doesnt have to
Wants to know how to take care of plants - watering, pulling weeds,
Wants to understand what plants need to grow - light
Light and Shadow
(Electrical Engineer) - Brrrrr. I dont know about you, but I want to make sure that Im nice and warm on Mars. Especially on
those -150 C days. How will we heat our homes, water and food? What will power our robots and machines? In this group, we
will look at some of the types of power and energy that we will need to survive in a Mars colony. We will take what we know about
light and shadows (among other topics), and apply that knowledge to creating solar and wind energy. What supplies will we need
to bring? What resources will be there for us to use?
Skills:
Good at measurement - measuring light including angles
Interested in wind power and solar panels
Careful
Very technical
Likes to convert things
Good with Instruments
Measurement/ Data Management
(Structural Engineer) - Do you like to measure and analyze? Do you like to design? Structural engineering is a field of engineering
dealing with the analysis and design of structures that support or resist loads. Structural engineers are most commonly involved in
the design of buildings and large nonbuilding structures. In this group you will be looking at structures that could support a colony

on Mars like domes and mini domes. We will be using measurement, shapes and data analysis to design our own structures.
Skills
Can draw designs
Can work with a team to plan
Artistic
Creative
Thoughtful
Good at measuring
Careful
Waste in Our World
(Waste Management) Dirty, stinky waste! We all make it, now what are the people on Mars going to do with it? Just like the
people on Earth, the people living on Mars will need to have a place to put their waste. In this group, you will be thinking of
different ways to use, reuse and be creative with all types of waste. Disposing of waste in an environmentally friendly manner will
be important because we are staying on Mars. We dont have the option to leave Mars if it gets polluted. Where will we put our
food garbage? Where will we put our bathroom waste? How can we use our waste again? How will we avoid polluting our new
planet?
Skills
Have a stomach for waste
Inventive
Responsible

Simple Machines
(Mechanical Engineer) Help!!! Martian settlers need machines to help them explore their new home. We need a space suit so we
can move around outside of the colony. Special machines and robots will be required to help us with our daily settler activities. We
need a team of individuals to design and create these important items. Applicants will be required to have a strong understanding
of simple machines. They will need to use their creative and artistic skills to put their designs on paper. They will then need to
create a 3-D model of these creations to help the colony function. What materials will you need to complete your creations? How

can you use your special skills to help the other groups on our colony function?
Skills
Thoughtful
Good at building
Need to be able to put stuff together - wires
Knowledgeable and has some experience with simple machines
Is able to plan
Versatile
Works on improving things.

Project Management
(Project Manager) Will it all just come together like clockwork? Will it fit together like puzzle pieces? Or is this going to be a little
more.complex! Designing for a community is like designing a pond. You cant just throw in water, fish, and algae and hope it all
works out. All the parts of the community need to connect and work together in complex ways. And that requires project managers
to put on their thinking hats to look at each part of the project from different perspectives. We are going to be needing five people
to each try out a specific way of thinking (information, emotion, opportunity, caution, and creativity) and work together to make sure
that the whole project comes together. Lets get complex!

Six distinct directions are identified and assigned a color. The six directions are:

Managing Blue - what is the subject? what are we thinking about? what is the goal?
Information White - considering purely what information is available, what are the facts?
Emotions Red - intuitive or instinctive gut reactions or statements of emotional feeling (but not any

justification)

Discernment Black - logic applied to identifying reasons to be cautious and conservative

Optimistic response Yellow - logic applied to identifying benefits, seeking harmony

Creativity Green - statements of provocation and investigation, seeing where a thought goes
