Math This week we finished up our topic on transformations.

We took our final math test

on Wednesday. Our class average was a C. Not exactly how I wanted to end our math grade
for the year. Students struggled with following directions which is the cause of missed points.

Reading

For the past week, we have been reading the novel Wonder by RJ Palacio. We are
hooked! We have come to love Auggie throughout the book. The kids have brought up and participated in great discussions about differences and bullying. Taking time to read this book together has been a great way to end reading for the year! I have encouraged students to read, read,
read over summer. Its the only way to help prevent that summer slide that tends to occur.

Grammar Students made powerpoints reviewing the parts of speech that we covered
this year.

Writing This week students submitted their Poetry Portfolios to be graded. It was their
final English grade for the year. We then began working on two letters. One letter they wrote
was to the incoming fifth graders. The letter was titled How To Survive 5th Grade. The left
some awesome advice for the new students. The other letter was to their next years teacher
(whoever it is). They wrote about themselves, their strengths, weaknesses, and goals. Next
week, we will work on a 5th grade memory book to help them preserve their memories from this
year.

Social Studies We finished reading in our textbooks this week. We wrapped up our

study of how America came to be by learning about Westward Expansion and the events surrounding it.

Science This week we concluded our Project Lead The Way module by learning about what
automation in. Students participated in a few activities that helped them get a better understanding about the topic. They also were able to explore and iPad app on how to code and automate something.

Note From the Teacher:

We are down to 3 days left of school. Its hard to believe! What a great year it has been! We will
end the year with a few fun activities, both in our class and with the other fifth grade classes. We
will also hold our 5th grade mini-market on Tuesday, May 26 starting at 11:30pm. The students in
each of the three classes have worked in groups to design a store that will provide a service or sell
an item. This is a fun, culminating activity that helps wrap up our year of mini-economy and understanding of how our market economy works. This is a great learning experience for all and a fun
way to spend the remaining mini-economy money that students have earned. Letters went home
last week explaining the mini-market and at the bottom included a permission slip. If any items are
being brought in from home to either be used or sold, I need permission from you stating that you
are aware of this.
Next Wednesday, May 27 is our all-school Field Day. Pray for no rain! Make sure students dress
appropriately for a days worth of outdoor activities.
Have a great weekend!
