INFO GATHERING:
Do you have a pen?
Have you used a pen before?
How many units do you need to use?
What type of insulin do you use?
Pen types: Novolin insulin goes with Novo-Pen, Humilin with Luxura or Savvio
Needles gauge = thickness
o Larger # = smaller needle size
o Brands do not matter except NovoTwist for Novo-Pen only!
o Use only once!
USAGE:
Pen has three parts: Cap, Pen, Cartridge
Pull off cap
Unscrew cartridge
Push back piston
Insert insulin, colour/metal/small end first
Screw cartridge back on
Screw needle on, remove first cap keep for later
SHAKE YOUR PEN LIKE A LIGHT STICK/ROLL IT 10-20 times, NOT VIGOROUS! for cloudy insulin
(Pull out dosage knob and) to prime your pen and needle:
o dial 2 OR 4-6 units
o turn pen upright - lightly tap cartridge to release air bubble
o pull off inner needle cap
o push on knob until drop of insulin appears on needle
Dial to x unit
AREAS TO INJECT:
o Thighs, upper arm, abdominal area, buttocks abdominal area fast, make sure to alternate
o Can clean with warm water and soap
o Alcohol will sting
DO NOT INJECT ON:
o Shoulder, neck
Hold pen at 90 degree angle, pinch the area you are going to inject
Insert needle, hold 10 seconds for insulin to enter
Pull out
Put cap on pen via scoop method discard in sharp objects disposal
Replace cap of pen
MAINTENANCE:
Keep pen with you at all times can keep cartridge in pen
RT storage is fine for up to 1 month on opened insulin
Keep out of reach of children
Self monitor blood glucose
