A. Workinginpairs,studentswillbeaskedtocutoutnetsofrightrectangular
prismsandtapethemtogether.
B. Theywillthenanswerthequestion:Whichboxisbigger?intheirnotebooks
andjustifytheiranswersusingtheresourcestheyhave.Thequestionis
intentionallyvague.
C. Discussionwillfollowwherewediscussdifferentwayswecouldmeasurethe
box.Theteacherwillelicittwokeyresponses:wecouldbediscussingvolume
orsurfacearea.Then,theteacherwillexplainthattodaywewilldiscussthe
amountofspacethattheshapetakesuporhowmuchstufffitsinsideitits
volume.

Minilesson(10mins)
A. Indiscussionwiththestudents,theteacherwillpresentthefollowing,and
studentswilltakenotesintheirnotebooks:
1. Volumeistheamountofspacethatafiguretakesup.
2. Volumeismeasuredincubicunits.Wewilldiscussexamples.
3. Volumetellsushowmany1by1by1boxescouldfitinsideoursolid.
4. Theformulaforvolumeofarectangularprismislengthxwidthxheight.
B. Studentswillusethediscussiontosettlethequestionaboutwhichboxwas
bigger.Theywillmeasuretheedgesoftheboxesandcomputethevolumeof
each,includingunits.
C. Finally,theteacherwillcompleteanexampleproblemontheboardusinga
thinkaloudtechnique.

IndependentPractice(15mins)
A. Studentswillcompleteaworksheetwithpracticeproblemswheretheycompute
thevolumesofrightrectangularprisms.Theywillchecktheirworkwitheach
otherandwithmewhentheyaredone.
B. Challengeproblems:Forstudentswhofinishquicklyorwhoneedextra
challenge,theywillbeaskedtofindrectangularprismswithwholenumber
dimensionswithavolumeof64cubicunits.Then,theywillbeaskedtojustify
thattheirlistisexhaustive.
