Problem 1 - A simple model of a washing machine is illustrated in the given figure. A bundle of wet
clothes forms a mass of 5 kg in the machine which causes a rotating unbalance. The mass of the
washing machine including the rotating wet clothes is 50 kg and the diameter of the washer basket
(2e) is 50 cm. The spin cycle rotates at 900 rpm. Calculate the vibration amplitude (X) of the washing
machine. Take k = 20 kN/m and c = 200N.s/m.

Problem 2 - A four cylinder automobile engine is to be supported on three shock mounts, as indicated
in the below figure. The engine-block assembly weighs 200 kg. If the unbalanced force generated by
the engine is given by 3000 sin(100𝜋t) N, then;

a) Design the three shock mounts with stiffness k and viscous damping c such that the amplitude
of vibration is less than 2.5 mm. Assume that the damping ratio is 𝜁 = 0.01.
b) Plot the amplitude of the response of the system with respect to 𝜔/𝜔𝑛 for values of 𝜔 from 0
rad/s to 250𝜋 rad/s.
c) Plot the force transmitted to the ground with respect to 𝜔/𝜔𝑛 for values of 𝜔 from 0 rad/s to
250𝜋 rad/s.

Problem 3 - A machine is mounted on an elastic support with k = 825kN/m and negligible damping.
The mass of the machine is 175 kg and it is constrained to move only in vertical direction and the
periodic forcing on the machine is given in the below figure with period T = 4 sec.

a) Find the Fourier series representation of the periodic forcing given and plot the forcing and its
Fourier series representation by taking 3, 5 and 10 terms on the same graph by using a suitable
computer program. You should also submit the code or screenshot of the computer software.
b) Find the upper bound for the amplitude of the displacement of the response of the machine
for the given periodic forcing by taking 3 terms of the Fourier series.
c) Find the upper bound for the force transmitted to the ground for the given periodic forcing
by taking 3 terms of the Fourier seri
