ACTIVITY REFLECTIVE SUMMARY

ACTIVITY TOPIC: Serve on the Administrative Retreat Committee
PARTICIPANT: Jo Ann Baker
1. What were the significant learning points of this activity?
I served on the Administrative Retreat Committee in 2014. Our
topic was Spring Training: Build Your Bench. The group was
directed to develop the agenda to address succession planning
within an organizations. Using baseball and the book, Crucial
Conversations, as the central theme, the day was developed.
Some of the topic headers of the day were Coaching and
Managing, The Coaching Model, Path to the Show, and Instant
Replay of the strategies highlighted durient the day. Each
session included key points, video clips and activities. The
dialogue was scripted, approved and practiced prior to the
presentation at the Retreat.
The key learning points of this activity included developing a
working relationship with people that you may not know, to
develop and execute this project. Also, to be open to exploring
unchartered areas to develop, learn and provide a polished
product for the retreat. For me, a key learning points included
working on a project that I have little knowledge about, not
personalizing edits and critiques by others, and mastering
computer enhancements that I was not comfortable with.
2. Which leadership characteristics was/were enhanced or learned
through this activity? Explain.
Leadership characteristics 3, 6, 8, 15, 16, and 17 were enhanced
with this activity. Has excellent interpersonal and
communication skills was enhanced during this project (#3). I
feel this was enhanced as the project progressed. The section
my partner and I had to develop was part of an evolving process,
so I did not always feel comfortable with my assignment until
later in the process. I was fortunate to have a supportive partner
and mentor to assist with involvement in a project such as this
and constructive critique. I pride myself on being an expert in
my field, but this moved me out of my comfort zone for a period

of time. I facilitated ordering the promo items for the day


through the Division of Visually Impaired after logo/print approval
through the College.
Exhibits a strong sense of team spirit (6) was shown through
participating with this project, taking in stride the assignment as
pitcher for our invitation (it was fun!) and learning and
immersing myself in unknown territory. Every participant
assigned in this group worked as a team, making the event a
success.
Is able to see the Big Picture (8) was developed through the
process of organizing and preparing the draft agenda and
content with the group for the Retreat.
Treats people with respect, dignity and fairness (15) was
enhanced for me with this project. I realize I am a strong
personality, however, I do retreat and speak less in unchartered
territory. It was challenging to me to have re-edits of dialogue
and pictures, especially when trying to master content and
striving to have a positive part. I feel I embraced the traits of
this characteristic.
Strives to get it right (16) was definitely demonstrated. My
mentor, Judi, gave me great constructive criticism. I took it,
practiced diligently, and was able to develop and execute my
script with input from my team.
Follows through (17) was evident with the successful Retreat.
