Topic/Concept/Skill:
Introduction to World War II section of learning. This is a two-day lesson plan for an overview of
the four well-known events/people of World War II. In particular, this lesson will cover Pearl
Harbor, the Holocaust, the dropping of the atomic bombs, and introducing the ideology of the
leaders.
Related Standard:
USH.5.2 Compare and contrast President Franklin D. Roosevelts world view with that of
Germanys Adolf Hitler, Italys Benito Mussolini, the Soviet Unions Joseph Stalin, and Japans
Hideki Tojo. (Government; Individuals, Society and Culture)
USH.5.3 Identify and explain key events from Versailles to Pearl Harbor that resulted in the
United States entry into World War II. (Government, Geography)

Background:
Identifying information provided as an introduction to World War II section.
Main Objective of Instruction:
In order to introduce the World War II section, TSWBAT students will collaborate into 4 groups
that will rotate stations to analyze the information at each station they will have 20-30 minutes
to complete each station and this lesson will take two days to complete. (Analysis)
Teacher Materials/Resources:
PowerPoint, 4 computers, 1 Pair of headphones, 4 Pearl Harbor handouts, 4 The Holocaust
handouts, 4 Atomic Bombs handouts, 1 Hitlers May Day Speech handout, 1 Benito Mussolini
handout, 1 Hideki Tojo handout, Guiding Questions handout, and WWII Intro. Quiz
Student Materials:
Pen/Pencil
Anticipatory Set (Introductory Approach):

Will read 5 obscure and interesting facts about World War II at the beginning of class on each
day. In total there will be 10 obscure and interesting facts being read to the class.
Instructional Procedures (Whole Group):
1) Take attendance and tell students that today will start of the World War II section
introduction. First tell students that I will give them a general overview of the war itself
highlighting the key people, countrys involved, important events, and battles. Secondly
tell students that they will be doing stations today and divide students into groups of 4
and will rotate every 20-30 minutes (This will depend on how much time students take at
each station). (5 min)
2) Anticipatory Set (5 min)
3) Show students the general overview PowerPoint that highlights the important people,
countries, events, and battles that will be talked about in the upcoming days to cover the
main topics this section will cover. (5 min)
4) Assign students into groups of 4 by having students count out loud 1,2,3,4 and repeat until
all students are assigned a number. Before the students separate to their stations warn
them of the chance that they will see some graphic content at station 4. Once this is
complete have each group go to one of the four stations set up around the room. Each
station shall have a computer at them so that the part of the activity at each section that
requires one will be accomplished. Students will complete 2 stations a day and will have
no homework over this lesson. (80-120 min) (Interpersonal)
Station One: One student will watch a YouTube video
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iHKtrirjlY) of President Franklin Delano
Roosevelt giving his Four Freedoms Speech (headphones will be provided at this
station for the video). The other three students will each read one of the following
documents: Hitlers May Day Speech, Benito Mussolini, and Hideki Tojo. Students
should only take 5 minutes at the maximum to complete their separate
readings/video. Student should then take an additional 5 minutes to explain the key
points in the speeches or biography about the leaders to their fellow group
members. For the last 10-20 minutes students should compare and contrast the
similarities and dissimilarities of the different leaders ideology. They should also
take that time to answer the four guided questions for section one. (20-30 min)

Station Two: Students will take 5 minutes to read the handout titled Pearl Harbor
at their station. Once the 5 minutes has passed students will spend the next 5
minutes on the computer viewing the images provided on the computer at their
station (http://time.com/3620986/after-pearl-harbor-rare-photos-from-theamerican-home-front/#1). For the last 10-20 minutes students should take the
time to discuss what it was they read and saw about Pearl Harbor. They should also
take this time to answer the four guided questions for section two. (20-30 min)

Station Three: Students will take 5 minutes to read the handout titled Atomic
Bombs at their station. Once the 5 minutes has passed students will spend the next
5 minutes on the computer viewing the images provided on the computer at their

to discuss what it was they read and saw about the atomic bombs. They should also
take this time to answer the four guided questions for section three. (20-30 min)

Station Four: Students will take 5 minutes to read the handout titled The
Holocaust at their station. Once the 5 minutes has passed students will spend the

next 5 minutes on the computer viewing the images provided on the computer at
their station (http://time.com/3638432/behind-the-picture-the-liberation-ofbuchenwald-april-1945/). For the last 10-20 minutes students should take the time
to discuss what it was they read and saw about the Holocaust. They should also
take this time to answer the four guided questions for section two. (20-30 min)

5) Once all the lessons are completed in order to test whether students actually learned
anything from this lesson there will be a 5 minute closure. (5 min)

Provisions for Individual and/or Group Differences:


ELL students who cant read English well will be provided with a copy of the handout at stations
two, three, and four in their own language. At station one they will be the student required to
watch the YouTube video.
IEP students will not be required to read the handouts they merely have to watch the YouTube
video and look at the pictures available at sections two, three, and four.
Closure:
Students will take a 10 question summative assessment in the form of a quiz to see if they
actually learned from the stations in the two days it would take to complete this lesson plan.
Evaluation of Learning:
In order to evaluate whether or not students learned anything about Pearl Harbor, Atomic Bombs,
The Holocaust, and the ideology of the leaders. Students will take a summative assessment in
the form of a 10 question quiz.
Independent Practice:
No homework will be assigned for this lesson.
