CSI: Scotland

In case you hadnt noticed, theres kind of a lot of death in Macbeth. Of Shakespeares plays,
Macbeth comes in at number 2 for the most killings. If Macbeth were a television show (keeping
my fingers crossed), it would almost certainly have to follow the patterns of modern detective
stories. We cant get enough of shows like CSI: Miami, CSI: NY, NCIS, Criminal Minds, Bones, Law
and Order, The Mentalist, Cold Case, Castle.you get the idea. So what if Macbeth was made into a
T.V. series? What might it look like?
For the final project of the unit, you will stage one of the crime scenes from the play and present your
final project to the class. Since we are not crime scene specialists, well listen to forensics experts in that
very field. Pay attention to their presentations so that your final project is worthy of a Prime Time
Emmy.
The following guidelines will help you in this project, so follow each step carefully.
1. Pick one of the following crime scenes to examine:
The murder of Duncan and his servants (between Acts 1 and 2)
The murder of Banquo and attempted murder of Fleance (Act 3 Scene 3)
The murder of the Macduffs (Act 4 Scene 2)
The murder of Young Siward and the slaying of Macbeth (Act 5 Scenes 7 and 8)
2. Read the necessary scenes in detail and take note of the following
Victims (age, height and build, likely clothing at time of death, etc.)
Killer (age, height and build, personality, etc.)
Weapons
Setting (draw logical conclusions regarding furniture at place of crime, etc.)
Actual event (was there a struggle or was the attack a surprise?)
3. Take notes from the forensics experts. TAKE LOTS AND LOTS OF NOTES! Make sure you
understand the difference between various murder weapons and their usage, size of both victim
and killer as well as physical space of each, etc.
4. Using the tools and directions provided, recreate a likely model of the crime scene youve
selected. Youll need to take some liberties in your crime scenes since Shakespeare didnt
provide many details. Your model should include:
To scale crime scene
Be colorful and neat
Detailed, with explanations when necessary
Accurate in respect to the detail from the text
