Physical Therapist
Pain in the neck? Tired of pharmaceuticals? Make surgery your last option and try physical
therapy.
Physical therapists help people return to their normal lifestyle after an injury or surgery.
Physical therapy is the treatment of an illness/disease or injury without medication/drug or
surgery. I am interested in this field of work because contrary to popular belief, I feel you do
not need pharmaceuticals to treat every little thing that happens to a person. We are living in a
time in history where kids are being raised to believe that there is a pill for everything. You
never have to be tired, sad, angry, in pain, anxious, or unable to sleep. Our country has a huge
prescription drug problem at the present time and I feel this line of work can help us solve this
problem. Physical therapy along with psychiatric counseling is important in the fight against
prescription drug use as people need to be taught to live with a certain amount of pain. Few
people have no pain at all and people need to understand that they will have to live with a
certain amount of pain. I also like to encourage people to push themselves physically and help
them see the progress they can make through exercise.
In this paper I will be presenting information about the history of physical therapy, how
it got started, when it spiked, and some big events that helped it flourish. I will detail all of the
requirements necessary to become a physical therapist including schooling, licensing,
affiliations, and continuing education. I will also be telling you what the job description of a

physical therapist is, what types of service they provide, and what their limitations are in the
medical community. Then last, but certainly not least, I will be talking about the reflection and
outlook for this type of profession.

Physical therapy has played a major role in big events over its lifetime and really isnt as
old as most people think it is. Physical therapy was first recognized as a professional
association in 1921. Before it was called the American Physical Therapy Association it was
called the American Womens Physical Therapeutic Association. When the AWPTA started
,with Mary McMillan as their president, they only had 274 members because initially they only
allowed women to join. The first man to be allowed to join wasnt officially brought in until the
1930s, after a code of ethics was signed. After that code of ethics their membership
immediately grew to 1,000. APTA History. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Nov. 2014. During World
War II physical therapy really took off. America had a lot of soldiers coming home who were
severely injured and there was not enough medications to help them all. Some of the soldiers
injuries were not life ending and could have been cured by some simple physical therapy. It
was this time in history that unfortunately the numbers of members boomed.
Currently about 213 colleges and universities offer physical therapy education programs.
There are quite a few requirements for becoming a physical therapist such as medical
training, education, licenses, internships and residency. For the education aspect you would
need a doctoral or professional degree, DPT, that requires about 7-8 years of college. All states
requires this certification. Courses you should take during your college education are anatomy,
psychology, biology, chemistry, pharmacology, nutrition, and physics. U.S. Bureau of Labor

Statistics. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, n.d. Web. 27 Nov. 2014 The University of Utah is

one of the most recognized schools for getting people in the medical field. Ways to get
recognized while you are still in school is to obviously get good grades in the classes you are in,
intern, and even volunteer. It is important to get involved in all aspects of the field you are
looking into and make personal connections with people in the profession. It is important for
you to have connections in the field after graduation which will make it far easier to find a job.

Jobs or professions that are available are physical therapists, assistants, therapist aid,
massage therapist, and chiropractors. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics, n.d. Web. 28 Nov. 2014. They work in conjunction with doctors and nurses to

coordinate and manage patient care. Some of the most important attributes a person needs for
any of these positions are compassion, determination, personal physical fitness, be detail
oriented, and be resourceful. The connections you make in school and your internship will be
an integral part in you getting referrals from doctors and hospitals. Department of Physical
Therapy - College of Health - University of Utah. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Nov. 2014.

Personal physical fitness is an important requirement for a physical therapist because

above all you have to set a good example for the patient, people will take more direction from
someone who practices what they preach. The job also includes a lot of lifting and moving of
patients which puts you at risk for back injuries. You also spend the majority of your day on
your feet.

Physical therapists work in many settings including clinics, private offices, hospitals,
and nursing homes. Americas growing elderly community has added another aspect to
physical therapy with new geriatric specialties. Also, they are expected to be in larger demand
for the aging baby boomer generation who is focused on staying active and healthy and will
required help with age related wear and tear.
Daily duties include tending to each patient that is scheduled in the clinic for that day.
However, your responsibility does not end when the patient leaves the office. You need to
follow up on the patients care even after they leave your office. Physical therapists cannot
prescribe medication, they were in fact initially opposed to it. However, as medicine has
advanced they have come to realize it is a necessary part of a patients treatment in the way of
reducing pain and inflammation, aid in adequate circulation and metabolism, and promote
functional mobility. They continue to rely heavily on their training for pain control and patient
progress but also work with physicians to further patient progress with medications. So, even
though they do not prescribe medication, pharmacology is an important part of their required
education as they are still required to log and manage a patients current medication, identifying
adverse reactions, and educating patients on the responsible use of their medications.
If you are connected to a hospital you may also be required to share some on call duties
with other doctors who work for that hospital. This can be a stressful part of the job depending
on how long your shift lasts and how many patients are admitted while you are on call.
Physical Therapists work full time and usually work more normal hours between 6:00 a.m. and
7:00 p.m. Job duties for physical therapists include occupational, physical, speech therapy, diet
counseling, home exercise education, and wound care for patients you have been injured in

accidents, had strokes, or who are recuperating after a surgery. Compensation for this
profession is between $55,000.00 and $112,000.00 or about $35.00 per hour. You may also be
required to complete some continuing education courses periodically to keep current on changes
in education.

It would be difficult to see patients initially come into you in the condition that they
would be in, but the perks would be seeing the smile on your patients face when they are back
to normal and seeing them progress and get better because of the work you are doing and the
help you are giving them.
The need for these types of positions is supposed to increase by 35% in the coming 10
to 15 years. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, n.d. Web. 26
Nov. 2014 The outlook for this type of work is very good because the personal aspect of the

job, the one on one care, encouragement, and human evaluation are things that cannot be
duplicated in our computer age world. As medicine advances and saves lives of people who
would have died from injuries, heart attacks, strokes, etc. 30 years ago, jobs like these will be
required more and more to make people as functional as they can be.

I think it is a very important position that plays an integral part in our society. It is a job
that requires a human connection and it always will. The encouragement and human touch that
people supply one another is what makes this an irreplaceable part of a persons medical care.
Most people left to their own devices for physical therapy will not push themselves, they need

someone else there to push them beyond the limits they feel they have. I feel like I can make
people happy and I possess all of the characteristics this job requires.
