Crayon Rubbings,
Sentences the students created (assessed based on if they make sense)
Summarization (based on accuracy of the summary)
1. I will begin by catching up with my students. Its been quite a while
since weve seen each other
2. Then I will review what it means to summarize. We will each take
turns summarizing our spring break. I will go first to model it.
3. Then I will read the book Arthurs Family Vacation.
4. I will stop periodically throughout the book and we will summarize
as much as we can. We will use sticky notes to mark important
information that the book presents
5. At the end of the book we will finish our summary and read it
through to make sure it makes sense
6. After that I will talk about what it means to read with expression. We
will go over how question marks and exclamation marks change the
way we read.
7. We will practice this by going back through the book and looking for
question marks and exclamation marks and echo read them together.
8. After the student has become good at reading the sentences with
expression, we will move on to the next book.
9. I will read The Berenstain Bears Count Their Blessings
10. I will have sight words from the book written on note cards using hot
glue.
11. The student will use the cards and crayons to do crayon rubbings of
the words.
12. Then they will use their crayon rubbings to form their own
sentences.
13. I will encourage her to make sentences that are questions and
exclamations

14. Then we will practice reading the sentences using appropriate

expression
15. If there is time I will have the student read a book on her own, using
her best expressions

Reflection:
This lesson went really well. Navaeh was here today and I also had another student, Santiago.
Santiago is very, very quiet and didnt want to participate much at first. But as the lesson went on
he opened up and began to answer my questions with quite a bit of enthusiasm. Naveah was
really good at summarizing. She summarized the night she spent at her aunts house as well as
what she did over spring break. I tried to get Santiago to summarize his spring break but he
refused. We read through Arthurs Family Vacation and practiced summarizing the book. They
both did a really good job. After that I explained what it mean to read with expression. I had
them repeat some things after me with a lot of expression. We also thought about what our voices
sound like when we ask questions. Naveah understood what I was talking about very quickly. In
the book, whenever there was a ? or a ! I had the students repeat the sentence after me. This
allowed me to model what it should sound like before they practiced saying it on their own. After
the book was done we did our crayon rubbings and sentence creating. They did so well! We
separated the words into nouns, adjective, verbs, and other. They knew which category almost all
of the words went in! Then they created sentences using the words and read them with
expression. I was really pleased with how the lesson went and I wish Id had more time to make
more sentences with them. It was a good time.
