The Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning through Design (CETLD) is a higher

education initiative that seeks to advance higher education through design.


Its objectives included the advance of understanding,practice-based learning, interdisciplinarity
in design education, student voice and student-centred approaches to learning, use and
application of collections.
The Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning respond to the British Department of
Education and Science and the Department for Education and Employment visions for
"purposefully linking learning institutions and providers--including universities, libraries,
museums and galleries--in the development of a `learning society.'"
The CETL will provide excellent simulated learning environments where students can learn
together in a safe but authentic environment, which mirrors the practical and communication
challenges that students meet in practice. Innovative learning materials and methods will be
designed to support communication skills, teaching, self directed learning (SDL) and
interprofessional teaching, learning and assessment.
The CETL will also:

extend and develop excellent simulated learning environments where professional skills
can be learned in an authentic low-risk context
radically extend access to learning environments for our students, by developing and
evaluating a education model, and by extending access to the main centre
research the pedagogy of interprofessional skills, learning & teaching and disseminate
good practice to the Social Expert community
develop and adapt tools to enable early identification of students in need of targeted
academic support
engage in a vigorous programme of evaluated staff and educational development,
unifying an interprofessional faculty of experts drawn widely from the international field
of activity
Support faculty efforts to improve teaching by creating learning environments in which
our diverse student body achieves maximal learning potential, and to promote a culture
throughout the university which values and rewards effective teaching, and respects and
supports individual differences among learners.
