indefinitely.
A ray is part of a line. It has one endpoint and continues infinitely in one
direction. To name a ray, say the name of its endpoint first and then say the name
vertex.
Intersecting lines have one point in common.
Perpendicular lines are special intersecting lines that form right angles when they
intersect.
Parallel lines are lines that lie in the same place and do not intersect. Parallel lines
are always the same distance apart and do not share any points.
To represent a perpendicular line, a right angle square is drawn in the corner of
one of the lines.
Rationale:
The students have struggled with these concepts. This lesson is a review from Monday
Identify and describe representations of points, lines, line segments, rays, and
Lesson Opening:
To begin the lesson, I will give students two sticky notes with either an example
or a definition of the following: ray, line, point, line segment, parallel lines, perpendicular
lines, intersecting lines. I will have chart paper set up around the room with the one of the
headings on each piece of paper. The students will be asked to place their sticky note
under the appropriate category with an explanation of why they believe that item should
go in that category written on the paper.
Instructional Strategies/Processes:
Lecture
Didactic questioning
Products:
Sorting worksheet
Assessment:
Student understanding will be assessed first through the whole-class sorting activity. The
students will also be assessed based on their performance on the attached worksheet.
Closure:
To close the lesson, I will introduce the following days lesson. The next lesson will be an
application of the basic geometric ideas presented and reviewed in this lesson.
Homework: Worksheet, if not completed in class
Differentiation: For students who need modifications on their classwork/homework
assignment, assignments can be made shorter or certain problems will be assigned. These
modifications are on an individual needs basis.
