Teaching Situation
The class takes place in the language center at Omar Almukhtar University in Al Bayda,
Libya. The language center gives the opportunity to students who have scholarships to study
English before they leave the country and study English as a second language in the UK, the
USA, or Canada. Accordingly, English is taught to learners as a foreign language. The Libyan
government made an agreement with the British Council to provide language centers across the
country with materials, equipment, and training for teachers to improve their teaching skills.
The class takes place in a room that has an interactive whiteboard, computer, and
traditional whiteboard. There are also some posters around the class to make learners learn some
vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. The number of students is 14. All learners are native
speakers of Libyan Arabic. There are 8 females and 6 males. The class meets every weekday
from 9:30 to 2 pm. The first class is a listening and speaking class that starts at 9:30 and ends at
11:30. The second class is a reading and writing class that takes place from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm.
Also, learners have an additional class for a lab time. They spend about an hour and half in the
lab every week. The session takes place on Tuesdays from 3 to 4:30.
As it has been noted above, the class is designed to enable students to communicate with
native speakers of English and prepare them to academic courses. For this reason, Face2Face is
used as the main book for this class. Face2Face is a British book series. It has six different
books for beginners, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, and
advanced. The advanced book is used in this class. I chose to develop five activities based on

Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) for this class. It is worth noting that activity
five was developed from Using Corpora in the Language Classroom by Randi Reppen.
The course aims to develop the four skills in order to prepare learners for the English
courses that they will take in the future. Also, it aims to help learners to communicate with other
people in English in order to avoid language barrier when they live overseas. The course has
some objectives. At the end of the course learners will be able to:
Improve their communication skills
Use some dramatic verbs
Use some connecting words such as unless, although and so on.
Write academic essays.
Use noun collocations and some idiomatic expressions in their essays
Use time expressions with the past simple and the present perfect
Use relative clauses with prepositions and participle clauses.
Know the denotational and connotational meaning of some adjectives
Use different techniques when they read such as skimming, scanning and so on.
Do some roleplays such as being tactful in different situations.
