5.c. Descriptions
Artifacts/Images from Popular Visual Culture:
1. Animal Habitats
The huge variety of animal habitats exemplifies how homes can come in all different shapes,
colors, sizes, and media. They also demonstrate how homes provide safety and protection from
dangers such as weather and predators. In addition animal habitats provide another context for
learning about homes other than the normal idea of man-made structures.

Works of Art:
1. The Den by Trenton Doyle Hancock
This painting is expressive of the idea of home, because it combines the idea of memory, its
attachment to objects, along with memories of home. This painting shows how a specific pattern

can immediately trigger a memory. This painting allows for students to see how connections can
be made between memory and the patterns and objects that are within our homes.
2. We the People by Danh Vo
This installation is an entire replica of the Statue of Liberty, broken up into hundreds of parts.
The title refers to the US Declaration of Independence but the fact that the work is fragmented
and has been spread across the world gives notion to the interconnectedness of the world today,
especially US society and culture. The work ties to the concept of Home because being from the
states is being from a multitude of unique cultures, places and people. It references the fact that
United States citizens are historically diverse and in fact made from diversity (hints the Statue of
Liberty is a US symbol).
