The Humane Society of the United States (2014, September 03).

Internet Animal
Cruelty. Retrieved from http://www.humanesociety.org
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has an article that states that animal
cruelty is also taking place on the internet. The HSUS starts the article by stating that the
internet has become saturated with video-sharing websites, many of which have become
venues for users to upload images of animal cruelty. One problem found with videos
posted online is that it is extremely difficult to obtain animal cruelty prosecutions in cases
where alleged animal abuse is posted online, because of the difficulty in identifying the
date and location of the abuse, as well as the identity of the abuser. Therefore the
offender will most likely get away with the crime he/she has committed. After learning
aboutthe many video posted online the HSUS proclaims that the only way we can help
stop the submission of these videos is by hoping that the particular websites ISP
(Internet service provider) to remove the offensive images or video content.

The website does prove to be a useful source. The article in the website was written or
published for Americans who have access to computers. The website is actually even
more if not a little more reliable than all the other sources, because of the credibility of
the well known organization. The source is somewhat biased because it states a plethora
of unnecessary information. This particular source fits into my research because it
provides that there isnt just one form of animal abuse

Moye, David (2015, March 19). Jeremy Dugas Tried To Sell Duct-Taped Iguanas Dangling
From Bicycle: Cops. Huff Post News. Retrieved from http://www.huffingtonpost.com
The Huffington Post wrote a newspaper article on how a 35 year old Florida man named
Jeremy DugasIs facing animal cruelty charges after allegedly attempting to sell live
iguanas that he had hog-tied with duct tape and wire. (Moye, 2015) Dugas was arrested
in Key West Florida on a Tuesday after a woman proclaimed that he reportedly tried to
sell her the bound iguanas to cook for a meal. The police later found Dugas sitting on his
bike outside a small restaurant. The police officers stated that there were three four feet
long orange iguanas dangling from the bicycles handlebars, the iguanas were tied where
their front and back legs were tied with duct tape and a metal wire running to each set of
legs, acting as a handle. He reported that he just had the intention to eat the iguanas
which is legal in the state of Florida because the iguanas are a non-native invasive species
in Florida. However, the way he was treating the live iguanas is considered animal
cruelty and therefore, was charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty on a $5,000 bond.
The article is a useful source because it is from a newspaper article. The article from the
Huffington Post is different from all the other articles because unlike the other sources it
shows a different viewpoint of the topic. It shows the side where people can and will be
arrested if found committing an animal cruelty act. The information is reliable and is not
biased, because it shows what the police officers and the witnesses observed. This source
did help me by being able to see that animal abuse isnt tolerated anywhere.
Braude, Jim. (2014, February 09). Cruel Divide. The Boston Globe, Retrieved from
http://www.bostonglobe.com
Research shows that out of 240 18-to-25-year-olds sampled more showed concern for the
welfare of a dog than that of a human, but only if the person was as adult. Also it showed
that when someone of a more tender age was substituted: Its fair to say a young child

and a dog get the same amount of sympathy. (Braude, 2014) The founder of this
research Jack Levin also stated that he believes that it is understood that a young child
and a dog will get the same amount of sympathy because they both show vulnerability
and innocence. He then went on by saying that we anthropomorphize our pets, which
then leads us to consider them part of our family. Braude then makes a statement saying
animal abuse is sadistic, indefensible. Human abuse is even worse. Some advocates argue
that certain animals (dogs, cats, horses etc.) should have the same legal rights and
protections as people. However, this seems somewhat far off and will likely not happen in
the next couple of months or years.
The source is useful and does contain information that could be helpful or crucial to
someones argument. There is a different point of view in this source not found in any of
the other sources. It shows how the abuse of animals and the abuse of children have some
similarities as well as some major differences. The information is reliable and is not as
biased as many other articles.I can use this source for future projects because it contains
an abundance of research and interviews that could be useful.
Michigan Law Review. Animals: Abuse: Malice toward the Owner. Michigan Law Review
11.1 (1912): 65. JSTOR. Web. 21 March. 2015
The scholarly article focus on a case where the defendant was prosecuted under section
II, 58I Michigan. Comp Laws, which provides a penalty for willfully and maliciously
killing, maiming, or disfiguring the horses, cattle, or other beasts of another. In this
particular case or offense the defendant had put a strap around the tongue of anothers
horse and had pulled upon it until he had injured the animal so badly that it had to be
killed. The article stated that the only reason the defendant committed the crime was
because he became angry when the animal refused to do its work. It then brings up a

different situation where the cases were the same but that the courts attempts to
distinguish it, but seems to overrule. The statue in the original case was enacted to protect
the owner and not to protect the animal. In the end however, the defendant was charged
with committing an assault towards the animal.
The source was useful and it is different from all my other sources because it shows that
sometimes the court decides to protect the defendant over the animal being abused. The
information is reliable because it comes directly from a case that happened. This
particular source shocked me and is different because it shows that animal abuse is
sometimes overlooked.

Arluke, Arnold. (2002) Animal Abuse as Dirty Play. Symbolic Interaction. 25.4. 405-430
The article begins with stating that animal abuse by children is generally regarded as an
impulsive psychological act without instrumental benefit. The research takes a
sociological approach to the topic, exploring the deliberate harm of animals as a
particular kind of unsavory play that is part of adolescent socialization. A research was
done where interviews were conducted with twenty-five college undergraduate students
who admitted to abusing animals earlier in their lives. The article states that scientists
and/or researches believe that the students or any person when they were little got excited
and a thrill when abusing animals. Some students admitted that they only abused animals
because they saw adults in their family abuse them. The article then goes on saying that
the abuse on animals also has to do with the culture of the student, whether it is socially
acceptable in the culture or it has to do with religion or beliefs.

The source is useful because it comes with an abundant amount of statistics and research.
It is different from all the other sources because it shows the side of animal abuse that
happens when you are a child and why children do it. The information is reliable and is
not biased. This source is helpful because it shows you the reasons why people start to
abuse animals.

Herbert, W. (1983). Animal Cruelty Verdict Reversed, Science News. 124.8. 118
Herbert begins the article by stating The conviction of a Maryland psychologist on
animal cruelty charges is the first such court action ever taken against an American
scientist, has been overturned by the states highest court. (Herbert, 1983) Edward Taub
is the director of the Institute for Behavioral Research in Silver Spring Md. He was
charged with 17 counts of animal cruelty, one for each monkey involved in the project.
His research on the on the central nervous system required that animals limbs be made
insensate by severing nerve fibers. It goes on saying that the cruelty charges were made
following a dramatic pre-dawn raid on the laboratory by local police officers, who had
been paid not to talk about what they saw in the laboratory. Taub was charged with the
prosecution of animal cruelty. However, the charges did not take place because they
claimed it was done for science.
The source is useful and it is different from all the other sources because it shows that
scientists can sometimes gest away with animal cruelty. The information is reliable and is
not biased or objective. It helps me because it again shows me that sometimes-animal
cruelty is overlooked and the proper actions do not take place.

Bulc, Gregor. (2002). Kill the Cat Killers: Moral Panic and Juvenile Crime in Slovenia.
Journal of Communication Inquiry, 26(3), 300-325.
The scholarly article is a different approach on animal abuse, instead of focusing only
on the issues of animal abuse, it focuses on the moral panic it would cause. The article
begins with the author noting that sociologists use this term moral panic to refer to a
social condition in which many people in society overreact to a newly perceived threat to
their well-being from. In this particular situation the threat was on The alleged kill of
some 40 cats by 3 high-school boys, aged 19 in Trzic, Solvenia in March 2000. (Bulc,
2002) As the author predicted after only 4 days of media reporting on the cat killings,
more than 20 articles and editors notes were published and at least 7 special television
reports were broadcasted. In the articles as well as in the television broadcast the boys
full names, almost exact addresses, and photographs were released. Many reporters and
so-called experts introduced a thesis that the boys could become serial killers. The author
clearly states that the boys were sentenced to some time in jail.

This source is quite different from all my other sources because it has to do with the more
social side of animal abuse and how the media and public react to it. The information is
reliable and is not as biased at most articles on animal abuse. The goal of the source is to

inform the public on what moral panic is and what could cause it. The source is very
helpful because it helps me better understand what the media and the public will do if a
case of animal abuse is reported. It hasnt changed the way I think about my topic;
instead it has broadened my beliefs on the topic.
