Philosophy Statement

As a primary teacher with a yearning desire to work in the early to

middle years of schooling, there are specific factors that have
influenced my beliefs on teaching and learning. The following points
have significantly impacted upon my beliefs as a primary years
teacher:

An inclusive learning environment

An engaging classroom and
Understanding and having a relationship with individual
students.

I value relationships with students and colleagues and believe

this is a vital part of working in an educational setting. Whilst
working in a school environment, it is important to show both
leadership and work as part of a team with other professionals. By
working alongside colleagues, information and practices can be
shared, to create a collaborative learning team. As a newly
graduated teacher, there are many different practices that can be
learnt from other teachers who have been in educational settings for
many more years than myself. I believe it is important to be open to
suggestions and critique, in order to progress as a professional.
It is vital to develop strong relationships with students, in order to
help students succeed in the classroom. There is a strong correlation
with student success and positive student-teacher relationships,
that is also mentioned in a study by Davis (2001). Relationships with
students should also be maintained in an attempt to enhance
student motivation and achievements. By engaging with students, it
is possible to develop an understanding of how individuals learn.
Different practices can be trialled in an attempt to improve student
success for many different learners. This will help to create an
inclusive learning environment for all students.
Issues of knowledge and learning
I place great importance on the issues of knowledge and
learning within a school context. There are many essential skills
that I believe are necessary to have and constantly work on, during
a teaching career. Teachers must be life-long learners. This requires
being open to opinions and constantly enhancing skills, knowledge
and practices as a professional. Not only is it important to learn
from other educators but teachers also learn from students. Another
very important skill is reflecting on teaching and learning. Reflection
is the key to success as a teacher. To improve ones practice, I
believe critical reflection should take place and all possible solutions
to problems should be considered. By reflecting on all aspects of

classroom practice, I will strive to continue to grow as a professional

and learn how to best handle workplace situations.

As a life-long learner, it is important to stay up to date with new

practices that are being used in education. One area that I need to
constantly keep updated on is new technologies. Students in the 21st
century are becoming more involved with different technological
devices. It is important as a teacher that I ensure I am making the
best use of this in the classroom and utilising these devices in the
classroom.
As parts of the National Curriculum are still waiting on final
endorsement, it is essential that I keep up to date with changes to
the curriculum. It is important to comprehend how students learn, in
order to elicit the appropriate method of delivering curriculum
content to students. Not all students will think about problems in the
same way and there are many different ways in which students
learn and develop. I think it is important to deliver lessons in many
different forms, in an attempt to help all students learn. This will
ensure that lessons are inclusive of all students.

An understanding of varying communities and contexts

I respect and highly regard the importance of having an
understanding of varying communities and contexts. As an
educator, I see the necessity in engaging with and learning about
communities in the area in which I am teaching. Not only should
local areas be studied, but also areas in which students have family
roots. It is important that students learn about their heritage,
cultures and traditions and that these are respected in the school
environment. By engaging with communities, students can benefit
and likewise the community can also develop stronger connections
with the school. It is important as an educator, to be sensitive and
caring toward communities and students. I believe that the physical,
social and emotional health of all students and community members
are very important. I will attempt to educate students in my
classroom on how to appropriately respond to one another and to
show respect inside and outside the classroom.
The manner in which a professional teacher draws these strands
together
I believe that the manner in which a professional teacher
draws these strands together relates to my philosophy aligning
with Australian Professional Standards for Teacher (APST). These
standards have been a basis for which my philosophy is created; to

ensure that all students are catered for and respected in the
classroom. By matching my philosophy with the APST, I am ensuring
that my teaching is of a high quality and hoping to improve
educational outcomes for all students. I believe that teaching
requires many people to be involved in students lives and not just
teachers at school. By gathering together with other colleagues,
learning from the community, and constantly being open to learning
new methods or possibilities, I believe students will reach their
maximum potential.
