    endofherspeechislanguage,andwhatherandthechildrenhavedonetogetheris
    educatethemselvesonthebeliefsthatthesetwodifferentgenerationshold.ToMorrison,
    adeadlanguageisnotonlyonenolongerspokenorwritten,itisunyieldinglanguage
    contenttoadmireitsownparalysisitisnotwithouteffectforitactivelythwartsthe
    intellect,stallsconscience,suppresseshumanpotential(page2).Morrisonbelievesthat
    languageisthekeytocreatinganationscultureandidentity.Languageisultimately
    whatinspiresthosetoconformasonetobuildwhattheirnationwilllooklikeandadapt
    totheoutsideworldasitcomes.Languageisthemostbasicthingthattiesanation
    togetherbecauseitallowssomanytocommunicatewithoneanotheronacommon
    ground.Thiscommunicationthenleadstothedevelopmentofselfconfidence,selfpride,
    andagreaterunderstandingofwhatitmeanstobebornintooneculture.Morrisonwrites,
    Oppressivelanguagedoesmorethanrepresentviolence;itisviolence;doesmorethan
    representthelimitsofknowledge;itlimitsknowledge(page2).Morrisonisshowing
    thatoppressivelanguagecanrestricttheextenttowhichanentireculturesbeliefscanbe
    restrictedtosolelythatdemographicandslowlyevolveintothisabominationthatno
    longersignifieswhataculturebelieves,butrathersignifieswhatissociallyacceptablefor
    otherstobelieve.Morrisonalsowrites,Narrativeisradical,creatingusatthevery
    momentitisbeingcreated.Wewillnotblameyouifyourreachexceedsyourgrasp;if
    lovesoignitesyourwordstheygodowninflamesandnothingisleftbuttheirscald
    (page5).Toher,yourlanguagecreatesthisimageofwhattheoldwillpassdowntothe
    new.Whatstorieswillbetold,whatbeliefswillbeshared,andwhattraditionswillbe
    heldtrue;toMorrison,regardlessofwhetherornotthelanguageisprettydoesnot
    matter,whatmattersisthataculturetrytopassdownitsheritageastogiveachanceof
    extendingitsexistence.Thatnewgenerationmayrejectwhattheyhaveheardandmake
    changes,buttheknowledgethattheylearnedfromthosestoriesatleastplayedafactoron
    theirdecisionsandshowedthemwhythingsarethewaytheyare.
