HQSI-12 Components of an Effective Lesson Plan

Date: March 7 2015

Grade/Class/Subject: 8th grade Science, States of Matter

Unit Theme: How the atoms are packed together in a solid, liquid, and gas.
Standards:
8.P.1.1 Understand the properties of matter and changes that occur when matter interacts in a
closed system.
RI.8.2 Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text,
including its relationship to supporting ideas; provide an objective summary of the text.
W.8.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and
information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.
W.8.2.A Introduce a topic clearly, previewing what is to follow; organize ideas, concepts, and
information into broader categories; include formatting (e.g., headings), graphics (e.g., charts,
tables), and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.
W.8.2.B Develop the topic with relevant, well-chosen facts, definitions, concrete details,
quotations, or other information and examples.
W.8.2.C Use appropriate and varied transitions to create cohesion and clarify the relationships
among ideas and concepts.
W.8.2.D Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the
topic.
SL.8.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and
teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas
and expressing their own clearly.
SL.8.5 Integrate multimedia and visual displays into presentations to clarify information,
strengthen claims and evidence, and add interest.

Lesson Sequence:
Introduction: Students will take out a piece of notebook paper and create a KWL chart (K is
what the students already know, W is what they want to learn about the lesson, and L is at the
end of the lesson on what they learned that day.) Students will only fill out the K and W part of
the chart. After a minute or so, students will share their thoughts with the class. After, the teacher
will present the objectives.
Daily Review: Ask students on what they remember about the states of matter when they were
taught this in elementary school.
Daily Objectives:
1. Students will be able to identify the three states of matter
2. Students will demonstrate how atoms are arranged in solids, liquids, and gases by creating a
model of atoms in class.
Concept: Physical Science; How atoms are arranged in the three states of matter.
Content Inside the Curriculum: Atoms in solid, liquids, and gas
Content Outside the Curriculum: Students will enhance their organization skills with the
activities by putting things into categories.
Guided Practice: Teacher will begin the lesson with a powerpoint. Students will then take out
their science notebooks and write down notes on the powerpoint. The powerpoint is self
explanatory so there isnt any additional information the teacher has to add on. Teacher will go
through each slide explaining the vocabulary words and circulating the classroom to make sure
the students are following directions. When the teacher comes upon the 7th slide in the
powerpoint she will then handout the atoms handout where students can have their own copy
of how the atoms are arranged in the states of matter. After the powerpoint, students will paste
their handout inside their notebooks so they wont lose it. Teacher will stop with the notes and
hand out the worksheet titled States of Matter. The teacher will then hold up different solid,

liquid, and gas substances that will fit under the categories on the worksheet. Students will shout
out the answer and write it down on the worksheet. The worksheet will be turned in after the
activity.
Grouping: The whole class will be one group when doing the guided practice, mostly everyone
will get an opportunity to speak. After the whole class group, the students will then work
independently.
Independent: Students will be making a model in class of how the atoms are arranged in the
three states of matter. They will get to choose a color of construction paper and grab scissors, a
black marker, glue, and a half sheet of white copy paper which will be provided for them. The
project will be titled How atoms are arranged in the three states of matter. The students will
then proceed to make three columns and label each solid, liquid and gas. After, the students will
cut up their own atoms with the white copy paper that was provided and paste them below each
state of matter arranging them how the teacher explained in the powerpoint or the students can
look at their notes. Below that, the student will write an example of a solid, liquid, and gas. The
project will be due at the end of class but if some do not finish, they can take it home to work on
as homework. There is an example provided, show the example to the class and answer any
questions they might have.
Long-Term Review: After each lesson, the next day the teacher sees the students, the educator
will ask review questions about the previous lesson making sure everyone remembers what they
were taught.
Closure: At the end of the lesson, students will fill out the last column of the KWL chart, the
what they learned after the lesson part. Some of the students will then share with the class on
what they learned.
Homework: Teacher will hand out the worksheet titled Whats the Matter? to the students so
they can complete it for homework. Homework is due the next time the teacher has the class.
Assessment: Teacher will walk around making sure everyone is following directions and on
task. At the end of each lesson in the unit there will be a quiz. At the end of the whole unit there
will be a test given.
