Stage 1- (Desired Results)

Established Goal(s): Include content standards, CCSS, course or program objectives, learning outcomes, etc.
NGSS

MS-ESS1-3: Analyze and interpret data to determine scale properties of objects in the
solar system.

Understanding(s): Students will understand that(big ideas)

Our solar systems is made up of many

different components.
Planets and other objects in the solar system
are in a specific order that does not change.
The relative sizes and distance of planets
from the Sun and other planets.
Properties and characteristics of the planets
are all different for specific reasons.
Students will know:
What different objects make up and are found in the
solar system

Essential Question(s):

What is unique about our Solar

System ?

Students will be able to:

Describe the different planets and objects found in
the solar system by researching the information

The order of the planets in our solar system

Illustrate a model of the solar system with the planets

in the correct sequence

The relative sizes and distance between planets in the

solar system

Analyze and interpret the models that are provided to

show planet sizes and distance between the planets
to scale

Properties of planets and the significance of the order

of planets

Compare and contrast the properties of different

planets orally

Stage 2- (Desired Results- How do you know they know? Collecting Data)
Performance Task
-Through what
authentic
performance task(s)
will students
demonstrate the
desired
understandings?
- By what criteria
will performances
of understanding be
judged?

Other Evidence

- Describe the different planets and objects found in the solar system by creating a

project highlighting one component of the solar system (this will be a class activity/
project)
- Students will develop a model of the solar system in order to better understand
the size ratio of planets using different spheres that we find in everyday life.
- Using models with a post, string, and correct spherical items analyze and interpret
the information provided to show planet sizes and distance between the planets to
scale.
- Compare and contrast the properties of different planets in the solar system by
identifying the similarities, differences and patterns that arise.
Desired Understandings: Concepts and Skills

Determine the parts of the Solar system?

Explanation
Identify what might happen if a planet did not exist?
Understanding
Explanation

Self-Knowledge

Perspective

How might we confirm/justify that the Earth is smaller

or larger than the other planets in the solar system?
What tools do we use to validate this information?
How can we best show the sizes and distances of the
planets? Support with ideas and examples.

Data Collected

Recreate a map of the solar

system
and describe the different
parts

Hypothesize the effects of a

planet
being added or removed
from the solar system.

Use context clues to investigate

the
sizes of planets and identify the
tools that we use to obtain this

knowledge.
How might the universe be viewed from a different
planets perspective? What would be some differences
and similarities? Propose a way that you could inhabit
that planet.
Create a model of the solar

system using relevant sizes and

distances between planets.

Objectives
I can explain how we represent the distances between planets.
I can use objects in everyday life to represent the planets and understand the space between them in the universe.
I can use my knowledge to recognize the expanse of the universe.
