Date: 10/20/2014 School: South Charleston High School Grade/Subject: 10th Grade U.S. History Unit Topic: The Constitution of the United States Lesson Topic: Amendments 11-27 of the U.S. Constitution Lesson 2 INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES/ STUDENT OUTCOMES: 1. Students will receive lecture on amendments 11-27 using the flipped classroom method; they will take notes from the PowerPoint and prepare for discussion next class period. 2. Students will be able to evaluate the purposes and contributions of government and explain the events that led to constitutional democracy WV CSOs: SS.10.H.CL2.4: Explain fundamental principles and purposes of the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights (e.g., through the Magna Carta, the English Bill of Rights, colonial charters and the political philosophies of the Enlightenment). NATIONAL STANDARDS: 6. POWER, AUTHORITY, AND GOVERNANCE: The development of civic competence requires an understanding of the foundations of political thought, and the historical development of various structures of power, authority, and governance. It also requires knowledge of the evolving functions of these structures in contemporary U.S. society, as well as in other parts of the world. PROCEDURES: Introduction/Lesson Set
At the beginning of class students will view a video from the history channel in reference to the U.S. Constitution and its amendments. PROCEDURES: Body/Transitions We will then transition to the lecture and PowerPoint slides for the lesson on the amendments 11-27. Students will take notes on amendments 11-27 and participate in large group discussion. PROCEDURES: Closure To close out the lesson I will review amendments 11-27 while assessing for understanding. ASSESSMENT: Diagnostic I will ask essential questions that will help me to diagnose students prior knowledge. ASSESSMENT: Formative During the discussion during my lecture from the PowerPoints I will assess student understanding. ASSESSMENT: Summative I will ask direct questions with large group responses to assess the level of understanding. MATERIALS: Computer, Textbook, Smart Board, EXTENDED ACTIVITIES: If Student Finishes Early I will provide an arts and crafts map related to the assignment. If Lesson Finishes Early I will show videos related to the group project. If Technology Fails I will have the students use their textbooks in order to research required data. POST-TEACHING: Write a few quick notes after lesson in order to write a formal reflection later that day when time allots.
